When i painted my first IG army I used the citadel paint, but now I'm wondering, if I could use like acrylic paint instead?
you could, but some paints aren't as good. craft paints are used by some here, but i have personnaly never used any other paints. vallejo is supposedly just as good a quality, and it comes in a dropper bottle. this is a plus for measurements, but can waste paints some times. i am no expert but that is what i get out of the discussions of paints.
Citadel paints are acrylics. I would recommend against using an acrylic paint that wasn't formulated for miniatures. The biggest reason is pigmintation size and the use of fillers such as chalk in most non miniature acrylic paints. The big three are GW/citadel, Vallejo, and Reaper.
As stated the vallejo come in dropper bottles which makes them very handy. The reaper pro paints do as well. So if that sounds useful to you I can assure you the vallejo paints are very good. The Game color line mimicks the GW paints quite closely.
Now craft acrylics are great for larger things such as terrain. They may be too chalky to work well enough with miniature scale stuff.
