That out the way... I have no assembled a space marine for a good long while (last two were in fact metal, so they don't count) for a long while, perhaps a year or more. Now I am going to put together five test minis for my DIY chapter, but I am wondering about assembling them. Is it better to leave the shoulder pads off and do them seperate? I know enough to leave the bolter off but what about the heads? All pieces are removed from the sprues but nothing is yet glued, just wondering if there is a better way of doing it.
One other thing; my colour scheme is going to be a desert looking one (hopefully), I am as yet to sort out colours to use and play with; any ideas with this? And bases too, sandy is obvious but how do you do sandy if your marine could look sandy - without him blending into the base?

I don't think there is a big problem with glueing on the head and should pads before you start to paint him. Maybe there is a tiny problem with getting the layering/highlights absolutely perfect around those areas but I don't get that annoyed about it. :rolleyes:

Hmm.. if you are going for desert yellow or some light color for the last highlight on your marines you could try to paint the base with a darker brown, like scorched brown or maybe bestial brown but I think scorched brown would do best. That wouldn't blend the model into the base when I'm just thinking about it but I guess you have to try it out yourself.

I then started to fully assemble the marines, because the boots ended up being a darker shade because they were base coated black, while the rest of the orange parts had a white base coat....
So long story short, now I put the whole thing together, base them all black, dry brush the whole thing with grey, do a light coat of white on the back pack, shoulder pads and boots, the start applying orange, and for gaming level guys this works out pretty well!

I find that having the shoulder pads on doesn't affect my ability to paint much so I usually put them on. The backpacks and heads however I leave off and paint them separately.
Here is what I have been doing:
I will glue the torso to the legs and then with blue tac I will position the arms, head, etc. to make sure I get the pose I want. Before the glue dries I will make any repositions to the torso to fit the pose.
For all the separtate pieces and their glue joints I will brush on vallejo mask (creates a gum mask that peels off when done that way the glue spots are with the material surface rather than paint. masking fluid can usually be found in art supply stores.
next I will drill a hole into the bottom of the head and mount it on a paperclip stuck into cork. I paint the heads separately as they are easier to do that way. If you really want control put the paperclip in a pin vise and use the pin vise as a handle.
With the arms and the shoulderpads I kind of just paint them the best I can making sure to at least get base coats on them before gluing.
Once I am satisfied with the paint I remove the masking fluid and glue the model together. If there are any further highlights needed on the surface areas of the parts I glued on I take care of them here.
Seems like a lot of work but I find that overall it is easier to do as you have full access to everything. So you end up with better highlights etc and usually in less time and without risking damaging your brushes!

i assemble the torso, legs, base and head.
then i spray primer color.
touch it up(with corresponding color)
assemble each arm with pads.
paint every piece seperately.
glue the back/powerpack on.
if you want you can leave off just the backpack when painting for the reason of painting every spot.
for CC marines, i just assemble everything except the pack. again, this allows to get every spot.
i know i don't need to tell you, but TRIM the FLASH! that was for newer players around here who, are well, new and inexperienced.
hmm you might want to look in the imperial guard codex in all the different chapters section they have lots of paint schemes in there and in the colours dont work their then pic colours that work well like a kacki for the base and like a brown dot surronded by a black line around it
As someone has already said, glue the body, legs and base together first, and paint those.
- Do (prep, undercoat, paint) the head, pads and backpack separately (glue them to sprues so you can do them en masse)
- Then glue the basecoated arms on, and paint them 'into' the figure
- Then glue on the head, pads and backpack. Now is the best time to apply transfers to the pads btw
- Finally, prep and paint the weapon, and glue it in place.
Look at the new Tau Empires Codex for ideas on how to paint the desert theme. Personally, I dont think the Marines would bother too much with actual camoflage, so choose a more or less Desert-coloured paint such as Vomit Brown or Desert Yellow - or go to Tamiya and go with Dark Yellow as such) and if neccessary choose a complimentary colour such as Terracotta or Bestial Brown. You know my own minis all have a desert base, as my own scenary is desert orientated. This is the only example I have to hand of how I paint my bases (using four colours, very slippery), you will see more at the Meetup of course.
