Rain makes people do funny things doesn't it ? For no particular reason last week I decided to build a field of Helm's Deep which will hopefully one day host some 40K games. Armed with my Two Towers DVD & remote control with fully functional pause button, I first got some reference pics. For Australian visitors wanting all kinds of foam, check out the offcut bin in front of any Clark Rubber store. Now, this is my first time working with foam and I feel I've wasted quite a bit of material but what the hell. Note the poxy Eldar which should show you the scale.
Starting with a slab of particle board from the shed I carved out the basic shape in high density foam.
Then I found that nothing sticks to foam so I had the bright idea of coating it in a layer of plaster which worked a treat but it was so thin & brittle you could poke a finger through it. Then I decided to get hardcore and layed on a few coats of fibreglass which worked better.
Then came a LOT of auto body filler & sanding. The yellow you see is auto high-fill primer thinned out just a little bit. There's still a lot of filling & sanding to go but I'm getting there.
I've also learned that laying plaster & fibreglass on the kitchen table is a great way to get the wife pissed at you.
Gotta love the rainy days! Looks bloody awesome man!:w00t: Could even write some somewhat humorous/interesting fluff about a flashback/vision of LOTR going on during a battle there.
So there I was...
Buying things after alcohol consumption is a very interesting way to get into the hobby!
That looks pretty good. Hope you aren't sleeping on the couch tonight either
Looks great so far.
that looks really good how did you work with the foam and what kind of foam is it?
Awesome. Ye should make the mountains behind it too

yep, the black stuff you see behind it is the start of the mountains. Foam core backing, wife's pantyhose stretched over stuffed with newspaper, coated in fibreglass resin.
I like it a look, although the outdoor pictures suggest that it was not a rainy day, but a rather sunny one
