i am just wondering which of the black methods i should use to paint my space marine custom chapter
thank you for any help
It's up to you, try each and see which you prefer. There is no real 'right or wrong' for painting black but it is a harder colour to do right; practice and see which you like best.
It's a total sell-out move, but since black doesn't truly have a highlight color in real life (it just reflects), I just painted my models black and then used a gloss sealer on them to make them shiny.
Looking back on it, I wish I would've used a brush-on sealer and glossed the typical "highlight areas" and left everything else matte, but for the amount of work I put into it (not much), I'm happy enough with the results.
I'll put more work into my next army now that I've got something I can put on the table.
We all carry on,
When our brothers in arms are gone.
So raise your glass high
For tomorrow we die,
And return from the ashes you call.
I agree with KUF. Paint them the way you like. I personally don't care for the extreme highlights on black unless it is done very well and crisp. So I would suggest a more natural look of the other two methods.
One thing I do is start with a black base and then take a very dark grey and mix it with black and add the highlight areas. Then I take a black ink mixed with my future floor wax, extender mix and brush it over the grey to tone it down a bit and blend it in. The effect works ok.

What Deadmarsh has proposed is a fairly acceptable way of doing the trick. Personally, I do something like that on my Sisters of Battle.
If you don't overdo it, the results are fairly acceptable, as you can see here.
