I've never really done any major conversions before and I was hoping I could find some advice for this one.
I would like to kit out a Space Wolves venerable dreadnought with a Plasma Cannon, but the PC doesn't come standard in the Venerable Dread' box. I know one option is to buy a PC Devastator Marine and cut off as much of the PC as possible, but I was wondering if anyone else had any better ideas. That seems like alot of money just to cut the model up . . . sure, I get an extra set of legs, but goodness.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You could get yourself a resin one from Forgeworld (this page) but they are quite expensive.
Your current idea is pretty good. You don't have to buy a whole devastator marine, just get the plasma cannon part from the online store - that way you wouldn't be wasting money on parts you don't need. If you were to convert your own PC arm I would use this part as a base as it has wires and fuel bottles already on it. Otherwise you will have to model ammo supply/feeds on yourself so that it looks a big more like a Plasma Cannon arm
Hope this helps mate.
I have a Plasma Cannon on my Dark Angels Dreadnought. This is how it works:
WARNING: Need several spare bitz.
1: Chaos Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon Right Arm
2: Imperial Guard Heavy Bolter
3: Stealth Suit Plasma Rifle
The claw part of the DCCW is removed. The Heavy Bolter barrel and the back is cut off, leaving two flat spaces on either end. The very end of the plasma rifle is cut off and placed on one end of the Heavy Bolter. The Heavy Bolter is Glued to the DCCW left after the claw is gone.
Paint. Mount. Done.
what happens when a plasma cannon over heats on a dreadnought?
sorry to go offtopic

Nothing, because the dreadnought is armored against it being a vehicle..Originally Posted by herr telefone

Nothing. That's the beauty! See this thread...Originally Posted by herr telefone

I don't use them on my dreads, though, for personal reasons. I like assault cannons more for fluff reasons. Though I may have to consider it for my Dark Angels dreadnought... That would fit.
I recommend buying the Forgeworld plasma cannon. It makes life so much easier and they make great stuff. Don't bring yourself to tears trying to hack away at a Devastator plasmacannon. It's just not worth the heartache!
Have fun with it, whatever you do!

Why buy when you can make it yourself?
The Plasma Cannon above took a chunk of cardboard, some plastic tubing (mainly used-up ballpen cartridges), a small piece of mesh material, some cables from broken earphones and - of course - a fair quantity of green stuff.
All in all, it was easier then it looks. Sure, not as pretty as FW, but... costed practically nothing.
