Sure, this may sound like a bit of a newbie question to all you seasoned miniature painters, but I was told to ask anything I wanted to know
First off, a little bit about myself. I recently (yesterday) bought myself a unit of chaos warriors, after not touching my unfinished orcs for about 3 years. I always used a "paint first, assemble later technique" on those orcs because a friend of mine said it would be easier I've never gone beyond flat, unthinned colors with a few drops of ink here and there. I'm now taking a more serious road to painting. I want to paint my regiment of chaos warriors as seen here, since I'm still learning to paint in general, making up my own color schemes was something I was trying to save for later units. Somebody once said on these boards "if your troop looks good from an arm length away, it will look good on the tabletop". Since I've always been kind of a detail freak, I beg to differ sometimes. I've begun painting the first warrior, just to get a "feel" for it (gonna paint the rest at the same time to speed it up a bit). I'm now at the point where I'm gonna start drybrushing, highlighting and inkwashing (scary moment ) The model looks ok from that arms length (no Golden Demon winner anytime soon, but that's fine), but when you look closer you see all the flaws I made in the details (practice makes perfect), but also the lack of detail (or color at all) on those hard to reach areas, like the part of the chest that's obscured by his shield. (meaning, parts of his chest are just the black they were after spraying it)
My question is as follows: should I try to practice painting details in those hard to reach areas where a rubber brush ( :shifty: )would come in handy, or should I just "not care" about that part and be happy with the look of the unit as a whole (talking just about the regiments here, not about stand alone units and characters).
Any input is greatly appreciated.
I've always taken the approach that "painting for effect" is like playing rhythm guitar, it is the back bone of a paint scheme. If you don't worry too much about the details and go for a solid overall look you will be pleased with the effect. Once you have mastered getting a solid overall effect you can always go back later and work on the details.
Just remember colour selection and smoothness are some of the most important parts of painting a mini, you can have all the detail in the world but if you can't make it look right with the rest of the army then it just doesn't work.

The simple answer is to paint as much and as well as you can.
To elaborate... Really how much detail you put into a figure is up to you. It is true that an army that is painted even to the most basic standard will look very nice on the game table. However there are definitely different levels to nice. The more detailed they are the even more impressive they will look on the battle field. But if you don't have the time, patience, or energy to work on the little details just the basics (if kept clean and tidy) will stand out immensely with the others that don't bother to paint at all, have sloppy color choices, etc.
As for painting in hard to reach places... try turning the model at different angles and see if that helps. Sometimes you can find and angle where you can see what you want to paint and the brush has access. If you have a synthetic brush that has started to curl - sometimes this makes it easy to reach those areas. Bottom line though is usually if you can't reach it with a brush you usually can't see it unless you are holding the figure close and meticulously inspecting it. for standard troops is it worth it?
Your idea of assembly line painting will definitely be beneficial in keeping a cohesive look and getting the figures done faster.

The lack of detail bit of my post was mostly in those hard to reach areas, I'm trying to find a balance between detail and time spent on painting. This probably means doing just the basics now, and going back when I feel a little more confident later.With my late greenskins, even though they were hidious, I mostly judged them on how they looked up close, and not as a whole or from a distance. Maybe it's just that I need a "change" of mentality, and settle with less than I'm used to. Anyhow, thanks for the (fast) replies, I'll keep you posted on the progress. I'll try to finish the first 3 steps of the mentioned painting scheme asap, so I get to see what the entire unit looks like. I can always decide what level of detail I "need" from there. If I get the chance, I might even bother you with some pictures
Any further input is still appreciated, anything I might learn now is time saved later
edit: damn, they're supposed to be teaching me UK-English in school, so why am I still typing color instead of colour?
