Here is my latest project - The White Dwarf. I started painting him quite some time ago (several months at least) but ended up pushing him aside for other things. Well I finally went back to him and finished him up.
Color scheme wise I went for the cover of White Dwarf issue 300 (US copy) featuring The White Dwarf - he is wearing crimson gloves and robe with a lighter blue clothing under his scale mail armor.
I am very pleased with how the white in his hair/beard turned out. I started with a white primer which I then glazed with watered down black ink. Next I highlighted the hair first with Vallejo game color wolf grey, ghost grey, VMC Ivory, and finally white.
Pictures are a bit bright around the metallics but the bottom of his scale mail has the alternating gold/silver scales. Axe is a bit washed out as well... Price to pay to get clearer pictures. Someday I will be able to afford a light box!
Snow is techstar snowflakes. Snow is techstar snowflakes. Snow is techstar snowflakes. There I said it 3 times fast. Techstar you owe me money! (or at least free snow!!!) :w00t:
I am also very pleased with how the red tint to his nose turned out. Let me know what you think. This was just a fun piece for me and I don't plan on keeping it. If you are interested please let me know.
Comments and critiques are always most welcome!
Great looking model, I love the snow.
The only thing that bugs me is the axe head seems a little plain and bright, maybe some freehand runes or dirtying up are in order, thats just me though. Superb model.

Yeah I have (3) 100W lights I take pictures under and it washed out some of the shading on the metals. Though you can see all the other details just fine! Trade-off I guess until I can afford a light box...
very nice work on the white beard and i like the red on the tip of his drunken dwarvish nose
Hi Slorak. With your bright lights, try putting tissue paper or thin paper over them to difuse the light. It should help on softening up the shadows cast and maybe even difuse the yellow in the pics. Daylight bulbs are another option.
its a nice tidy piece. With my only comment being the dark contrast in the hair and beard, it takes away the softness of hair. I think a lighter base shade whould have been better. A nice soft grey.
I agree with gareth here mate, the blacks in the hair do look a bit harsh, especially next to that stunning white.
I'm also not too sure on the eyes, they look a bit weird, but that is probably just the model.
A very nice piece overall, I really do like the red on his nose, very dwarfish
minus_t's painting log! Now with: More Wolves and Blue Robots!

I know, I know; I should take more active part in this forum as I mod it. But.. it's a dwarf, you'd expect me to ignore it?
First off, I agree with the comments on the beard; it is a bit dark for shading. Softer looking beard would have looked much better. Overall I am afraid I like this less than any other you have done, it could be the pictures I suppose but to me does not look like your usual high quaility. The eyes and face look a bit messy to me, there can be a lot of work done on this part and to make it stand out; something that is needed in the case of dwarves - the face needs to stand out well.
Now, I am hoping the picture has something to do with this but to me the red looks a bit washed. The back especially, looks rather unhighlighted. Knowing you I doubt this is the case but unfortunately that what it seems like to me. The gloves, however, look alright and the little gleam of blue through is a nice addition. The metallics look a little weak from you, though you've addressed this, but the ale in the helm looks alright. The nice snowy base suits him quite well.
Overall not bad but to me this is subpar to you, Slorak.
The only thing I can really say about the eyes is that the sculpt was a little wonky. The right eyeis a little "mis-aligned" to the left one as well as the left eye having a much more prominent brow... Maybe it was done this way on purpose? A crazed dwarf stare???
Won't 100W bulbs catch the tissue paper on fire? I don't want to turn into a fire bug! I will see if I can locate some and re-take some pictures.
As for the beard I really like the sharp contrast. To me it accentuates all the detal in the beard and hair and lets face it - on this figure that is where it all is...
Maybe I will go back and add runes to the axe. Never say never...

if you like the contrast in the beard that great. As so long as you're happy with it, who are we to comment. however...
I don't think its a case of contrast but making him look like the white dwarf, at the moment he looks like an imposter who needs his roots bleaching white again...
I actualy like the beard how it is because the black makes it vey distinguished.
