i ussualy us a black under coat. bu i find that i helps bring uot the coller if i dry brush or overbrush white. if you try it please reply with your results
Nice spelling. Anyways, I usually white drybrush skin areas and spots where i want the colour really light. Otherwise I just leave it black until I paint it.

There have actually been a couple of threads about this topic so you might be able to have a look around and find something.
It basically comes down to personal preference. Some people say that you can get better colour control painting over white. Some people rather the natural shading that black gives.
I personally use black, then work up to whatever colour I want, a bit like you are describing with the drybrush. I would think that this technique might help lighten the colour a bit. But I find that a solid colour rather than a drybrush is a bit more consistent, but might take a bit longer to do!
