I made my first latex mold the other day of some scenery that i had made........the mold works great with plaster but im not liking the plaster so much. IS there a resin or something else out there thats cheap and will work in the latex mold.......if so where can i get this stuff??? any help would be great
there is a website that i have been thinking about buying from. it has lots of products, including stuff to make moulds, and casting materials and mold release. click here
what kind of resin do you use? i am going to also start casting my custom death guard, and need a good set of products.
im not sure what type or resin to use either
I've tried casting resin but it gives a crap finish and doesn't set properly. I found fibreglass resin to be a winner, and cheap from your local hardware. Note it will perish your latex moulds after only a few goes
I use Alumilite Resin. You can demold it in 3 minutes. Comes in a 48 oz kit for around $35.00 or a gallon for 70-90. The base below is an all resin one I made for my IG HW teams. I used a GW base, built the sandbag bunker and made a master mold. Needed some extras the other night and poured 10 more in a little over 2 hours.
Ok, I feel like having a go on this subject.
Now I have never really tried doign any molding myself but I have got some good knowlege on the statistics and porperties of the materials.
First things first, never go for plaster, too brittle unless you base it properly during the setting process. In addition in my experience the plater has a tendency to flake off when handled incorrectly.
Resin, hmmmmm.... that could be a tricky one, as it is dependant of what type of resin you use.
You could go for the GW or rather Forgeworld stuff, but that stuff is quite expencie no matter where you buy it.
Industrial type could work.
Glassfiber, or if you have the cash for it, the kevlar or carbon type.
Only problem is already stated, it will tear at the moulds.
Other idea might be to use some type of readily avaliable metal that is easy to melt, eg. solder.
My last idea would be to simply go for the metal idea, but that is dependant on a new type of mould.
Get lots of RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizer) , red type.
As far as I know it is not avalibale in Norway but it should be avaliable in a DIV or any car workshop.
I got some access to it at work, but the stuff at work is EASA certified and approved and is expencie like h*ll.
You will mainly have the same perishable problem as the latex mold, but as the RTV is really flexible and easy to work with you should be able to make a new one in 5 mins plus curing time (Curing time is about 24 hours)
Using cheap solder on this moulds should work, just make the mould, gently powder the surfaces with with talcum or something amd start filling in the melted metal!
Allow the mould a little taime to cool down otherwise the mould will be ruined after 15 operations.
The mould will perish as you make the moulds, but it will not be visible until about the 15th casting.
Hope it helps
