Welcome to Librarium Online!
Howdy, my friend had an incident at a local GW store about a month ago. There was a small time painting competition and there were a lot of great stuff there. However, the kid who won had a expertly painted bunch of Chaos knights on horseback, but there was a noticable chip on the champions hair. To make matters worse, a couple guys had complete paint sets and offered them to him to touch up the chip before the competition started in about an hour. The kid didn't want to, and ironically won the overall prize. My friend thinks that this kid probably just bought the set online from EBay, and wouldn't do the touch up because he probably had no clue how to paint the hair.
So finally, here is my question: Is this becoming a common occurance and have you seen kids with mommy's wallet have kick ass minatures and no talent, or is my friend just bummed because a 16 year old won big time and he didn't win crap with his Khorne possessed?
That is a bummer....The only thing you can do is ask him if he painted the minis...if he says yes your stuck. But if he says anything else....tell the judges.
You can only win a contest if you enter your own work...
I feel for you brother....but keep painting and competing. Every mini you paint brings you closer to the GD slayer sword.
"Da Orks is da best cuz we ar ded ard an killy, mean, green, krumpin machines, hav da most dakka, da stompiest dreads, da shootiest gunz, da biggest bosses, an we uze choppas...WAAAGH!"
didnt something like that happen at a Games Day not to long ago? the judges found out and took away his golden deamon. i think people who enter work that is not theirs should be swallowed by nurgle...

there's nothing wrong with painting something really good, winning with it, and then making a little money off of it. If I could paint that well, I would. And yes Father Nurgle devours all paining cheaters eventually!!
Took away his golden demon? Do they go into his house and shout "RAZZIA!" and take away the diploma/price?
Or hang him out in White Dwarf? Imagine.. He won't be able to go in to a GW-shop without being recognised. "Liar." "Cheater." "Nice shoes."
Ask the kid to do a painting demo if he's so good at it... then we'll see if he's lieing. Don't forget to offer some money too, maybe in the hundreds... cause if you rat him out you won't have to pay him. But don't offer much to begin with, or heck dont offer anything to begin with.

Man this cheating is a disgrace. Contests are meant to show your painting skill, not auction buying skill!
Maybe the kid already knew he was going to win, so didn't really care about the chip. Its usually pretty obvious after you look at the other models where you are going to come. I've painted only a few time in GW stores. I wouldn't exactly be painting my prized knights with people walking past bumping and asking questions. I like to paint at home with my GF asleep, for ultimate concentration.
Thats only a possibility though. Maybe he was cheating, you should ask people you suspect how they do their awesome blending or the eyes and if they don't have a clue, you will know.
Ages ago about 6 years, I went to a painting competition that was being judged by a GW staff dude at our local gaming club. There was a youngbloods category (under 16's it was), so this alright painter just gave a model to his younger brother to win it for him. Someone just told the judges and they announced in front of everyone it would have won if it had actually been painted by someone under 16. Needless to say they both looked like dickheads.
how old was the kid?maybe e did paint it

He said the kid was 16. BTW did you ever think your friend was just a sore loser. I also think he may have a rectal cranial inversion because if he was so fething great and should of won then he would of come second something which you told us he didn't with this comment :he didn't win crap
