If you got easy access to MDF and hardboard then simply go for that, in my opinion that is the best stuff.
Foamboard is ok, but I think it's too suspect to bending and damage.

I WAS IN THE IMPERIAL (Norwegian) GUARD!
see if you can get your hands on pink or blue styrofoam thats good for making almost anything its very dense and easy to shape and sand down not like normal white polystyrene, it took me ages to get hold of it but after days of searching i found a site that sells it quite cheap (well i think any way)
heres a link to it
this is what they use alot in GW scenery
lonewolf i made a fort out of an old section of a record player i took to play disk from the top (you know the big circular thing) & some plastic bulkheads from the necromunda series (7 of them) a sheet of foamcard (/foamboard if you prefer) & made something similar to the fort thing that gw has their sm army arrayed over (oh i almost forgot) i also used parts of old plastic model kits (mir space station, anakin skywalkers pod racer, babalon 5) for some fine detail added some jungle trees & then painted it, & 6 years later it still looks mint & it is about 24'' long by 18'' wide
WARMASTER of the SCHOLA PROGENIUM Alnwick Chapter (soon to be the world)
I recently used two large pieces of Polystyrene to construct a ruined Imperial Guard Fort,
It had a large wall section at the front that had been shelled and blasted and some ruins behind it with two 9V batteries to create a ruined generator, we now use it at our school gaming and i will try get one of our IT technicians to get a picture of it on here for us.
