Welcome to Librarium Online!
i dont know if this is the right spot but its about terrain so anyways, i read a thread that you should 'bake' the branches at a certain degree to kill off bacteria and molds n etc. can anyone provide wit those temperature and time.
and heres an article if people havent seen...
I don't know the precise tempreatures but I know what you are talking about. Basically a tree branch was alive and when you went and grabbed it, it was dead or dying and will begin to rot. You need to avoid it getting moist and I imagine that instead of baking it you could use chemicals to kill all the life within the branch.
Bleach is always good at that.
If however you let it become moist again it will probably begin to rot again. You can often buy clean branches from stores anyway.
Actually it looks like that person in the article used a branch from a shrub/bush not a tree.
That would make more sense than using actual tree branches.
I'd recommend a sage bush(they grow naturally up here). But, I imagine there are many types that will work.
I know that they must be baked at a very low temperature (but not what temp.). Otherwise they burn. And only for a few minutes, it shouldn't take long to kill most of the bacteria.
The major problem with this technique is durability. Once dry, a peice of wood/branch begins to fall apart, it requires the water originally pumped through it to hold together and maintain a natural elasticity. When the water is removed it becomes britle and weak. A slight bump could break it easily, after only a month or 2.
You could urethane it to help prevent that, but it will only hold for so long.
Another thing to keep in mind is that it will generate a lot of small particles as it decomposses. It will be like a dog/cat shedding, and will make quite a mess in the long run.
However, using real branches can make for some really stunning and natural terrain peices, they just require a lot of care (much like their live counterparts). It's especially good for dioramas.
:ninja: Today is Ninja day :ninja: Have a nice one. :ninja:
