Here is my Ostermark army log. Due to lack of responces at warhammer-empire, I have decided to move the log here. This is just a summery of what I've done on it. (Note, I started this in September)
The aim of my army is for it to be poor, dirty, low tech, and rusty metals muddy cloths ect.
Anyways, before I started the army, I decided that I wanted the bases to be semeless. So this was my first try of it:
Since it turned out so well, I decided to make a whole display board like it. The idea of the army is that it is marching through some old forest (and little do they know, they're about to be ambushed by some beastmen):
Here is a shot with the top base removed. I wanted to be able to push the bases through from the bottom. So I used two peaces of 6mm MDF and cut the bases in the top one and added the sand and what not to that and drilled out holes for my fingers on the bottom ones.
This is the base fame
Added more sand, With each layer it becomes better.
After cutting each regiment free and seperating the bases and adding more layers of sand and repeating the process, it looked like this :
I added the sand to the boarder once i was happy it was done well enough, I glued and drilled the top to the bottom board and added the (not so) pretty (heh) boarder. This picture shows all the bases removed.
I started adding state troops, (Armless marauders represent the fowl beastmen). The idea of the army is to be more of a display than play able (but still being playable (in other words, looking better on the display board than on the battlefield)). As such, I've made it so some regiments are reacting to the beastmen, others are not, some have just noticed (as you would expect from an ambush).
Here are my hand gunners (was not going to use these, but the models were too good )
Here are some pictures of my color scheme for the 6th edition state troops (not their not finished, I still need to finish the weapons, shoes, and a bunch of touch ups, Just wanted to get most of the minis done so I can put them together). I should have this unit finished by Monday or Tuesday depending on work.
The total model count for the display board will be 261, which will include (Italics indicates that I have them, brackets indicates I have some) :
6 units of 20 (120) (I have 4 units)
42 archers (
4 x 10 detatchmets (40)
2 cannons (Have one cannon and thier associated crew)
2 elephants to tow the cannons (more on this later)
pegasus with wizard lord
griffon with EC
20 or so beastmen
a few chaos hounds
A total of around 261, not including a few random militia on the board.
What do you think of my idea? Any suggestions? Comments? Critsisms? questions? I'ld be happy to answer any
Thanks for your time

Talking with NarkLoaf on #warhammerfun, I have came to realize that I left a lot out (one of the problems of moving a log around).
The holes in the bottom of the base are so each regiment can be pushed out. Because there are no gaps and the bases fit tightly, I decided to add a second board underneath that had holes in it so i could push the bases through with my fingers. if i didn't have this board, the regiments and archer bases would fall through.
The wirey things are going to be trees. I found a great guide from them at Armorama.com . I will cover the trees in miliput than give them a layer of GS where I will carve some texture. For leaves, I'm gonna buy some fine leaf foliage from woodland scenics.
I hope have not missed too much more.
Sorry guys, Any questions you have, ask away
I tried the white socks, and it didn't look that good, so I tried yellow and it turned out pretty good I think
And group shot (still WIP, putting the finishing touches on a lot of the models now, and if you guys think the socks look better like that, I'll be painting all the socks too). I still need to add shields too
Any comments? Criticisms? suggestions?
Overall, display boards can be really good. With the correct idea, execution and ability they can make a small army look very cool. On the downside, they're expensive [maybe] and take up a lot of space. Your one looks pretty cool so far, cannot really tell with just a basic layout really, but a few things I have to say:
Mainly, the bases. The bases for me are off putting, they're huge! If you needed them to slot into a set hole then personally I would have done a board underneath to support and had a top layer deep enough that when a base shape is cut out it sunk neatly in [perhaps just make the holes slightly bigger]. But your bases are almost as big as the mini itself! I find that off putting on pure infantry; but that's a personal thing.
The painting looks good, neat and tidy with a good selection of colours. However, turn the flash off!! Flash is a terrible tool to use when taking photo's of mini's, you'd be much better off in using a daylight bulb or natural daylight. Also my major point here is the rust, or at least that is what I guess you were after. It looks like brown that has been painted onto the weapon heads. I would look more at improving that, try viewing the articles on CMON and see for yourself.
Yeah, I hate the rust. It looked sweet when it was a wash (brown, blazing orange and blood red), but when it dried it looked bad . I've read the stuff on CMON and a few other other places. I might just try painting the weapons brown or dark brown and dry brushing bolt gun metal or something. And if this fails, I'll try one of the CMON ways
About the bases: They did start off small, but I had to add layers to fill the gaps, and they eventually grew. Before I knew it, they were big.
Thanks for the comments,
Its pretty amazing except for the bases. Please do something to the bases they really do look weird.
Joe Peshi (lone wolf) kill tally:Lash Sorcerer, Ghazkull, Yriel, Termi Libby, Vulkan.
I can't. They are final.
There is nothing I can do about them, as you can see in the main base. If i make them smaller, it will look bad on the display, and the display is where it's supposed to look good. I don't really care if they look weird out of the display base, because 95% of the time thats where they will be.
