I'm toying with the idea of a wulfen heavy 13th company list. My problem is, the GW wulfen models look way to human to me - I'm wanting to do something more akin to a bipedal wolf then a hairy human. My problem is, I'm having trouble finding any wolf models that have heads I could use - any suggestions?
the problem with this. is that it is a dieing list. GW will be redoing the list soon (at least that is what they keep telling me and my brother... my brother used to play 13th company) and there is a good chance 13th company wont be remade as part of the space wolf army. also to add to this. My GW employees have informed me that except for ordering them individually, u can no longer get this (well maybe on ebay) because they stopped making the boxed set. the 13th company wulfen are comparable in many ways to the vostroyens (or however u spell it) that GW released for like a few months and then did not re-release again <--- notice the sad face.....
anyways, as fun and hairy a conversion as it would be... the best advice is to waite 3-5months from now and chances are GW will release or at least inform the public about their coming new Space Wolf models and Codex.
space wolfs are amazing. i love em. they were almost my first army until my brother wanted to play them ... lol. but my best advice is to wait on the converstion till the new codex comes out (whenever that may be) because you may conver models you can not use anymore ...
It wasn't going to be any time soon that I did this anyhow, as I'm still finishing up my tyranid project - but thank you, this gives me new hope that I may be able to do something in the future.
That isn't exactly correct.
Wulfen are, most definitely, still available. I was just at my "local" (over 50 miles away) GW store today and they had a FEW boxes of them.

As you can see here, they are still quite easily purchased from GW as complete boxes.
I don't forsee GW getting rid of Wulfen. they make MANY stupid moves, but the wulfen are too integral a part of Space Wolved legend and mythos to dump them.
Now, as far as alternate heads are concerned... If you are going to go that far, you might as well use completely alternate models and just add some GW bits to them (Like shoulder pads). Check out the Confrontation line of Wolfen, or the Orboros models from Privateer Press.
I wouldn't suggest skaven heads as they look like converted rat heads until you get to the point that they no longer do... at which time, it would have been just as easy to sculpt one from scratch.
If you're JUST looking for heads, try this:

HERE for plastic wolf sprues (not the best choice)
HERE for DIRE WOLF heads
Hope something here works for you.

I would not recommend the Confrontation Wolfen. They are huge. If you know what you're doing when it comes to GS, you could use such things as marauders of Chaos and sculpt on fur and the like.
You should really avoid those wolfheads as they are far to big, they will make the models look funny more then frightening. Not really suiting for Space Marines of any chapter I think...
I know Gareth has experimented with Wulfen, making own heads for them using GS and Beastman parts. They turned out really great. They were more "human" then wolf though...
Isn't there some cloaks with wolfheads around? Like in Mordheim (or even Space Wolves) or something? If so, try the size of them, they could be better.
Good luck and come back with pics when the project gets going.
