Welcome to Librarium Online!
Meh, I think the Chaos dread rocks... however for ideas for converting SM dreads, check the Chaos section in the gallery, I have pics of one such thingy there.

i converted my IW dread from the loyalist one. i put the big cow-lookin skull from the marauder standard in the middle of the "face plate". and i put random spikes all over it. be sure to use lots of spikes. if you make it with a CCW use tyranid monsterous creatures claws on the end of the CCW.

I'm currently in the process of converting the GW Chaos Dread into one more along the lines of a forge world one.
Personally, if you are confident enough, I think green stuff and plastic card is the way to go.
Put some trim around the edges, give it a decent head and so forth.
Keep pics of the forge world one nearby and base it off that.
Diffucult, but rewarding.
i think the chaos dread is fine but yes that would most definitely make it look cooler
For the chaos dread, i only like the exhaust pipes and the rear of the legs. The rest are pretty ugly, IMO. You would buy the chaos accessory sprue, THen get the SM dread. Put spikes and all that stuff all over, paint it like chaos, and there you have it. Good looking chaos dreadnought.
Going with the Normal Space Marine dread as an example, using the Chaos Spiky Bitz sprue, a marauder banner (the fabric one), some chain, a skeleton miniature and an (unfortunate) guardsman, here's what I did for my dread....
-Assemble the Sarcoffigi. When it comes to the front plate with the iconography on the front, file it down so it's flat. Grab the large deamonic warp amp thing from the spiky bitz sprue (looks like a speaker shaped like a face with horns) Place so the horns curve outwards so that the visor of the original frontplate isn't blocked. Where the chest moves up, add 1 of the plain hooks (one of the ones that isn't on the pivot things) on either side. Now, this part is optional, but I think looks good. Get the missile launcher front off the missile launcher arm and add to one of the sides. It's almost an exact fit, so greenstuff the gaps. On the other side, add the symetrical star of chaos. On the top, get one of the half circle trophy racks. Add the smaller deamon heads onto the engines exhausts.
- Assemble legs as normal. Get a hold of the skeleton, assemble torso, arms and head. Remove weaponry. Glue to one of the legs and then, wrap chain around it. Wrap some extra chain around the ankles. With the Marauder banner, cut it down so that it can be hung from the 'hips' of the dread. cut sections from it so that it still looks ragged.
- Assemble the Lascannon arm, then carefully remove the barrel ends. Replace with larger daemonic heads from spiky bitz sprue. Get one of the hooks that is on the pivot and remove the hook. Get the guardsman, drill a hole in him large enough so that the hook can be stuck into him. Glue the hook into him and then back onto the pivot. Once dry, attach to the shoulder of the lascannon.
- Assemble the CC arm as normal. Add another hook onto the shoulder and a sufficiently long/pointy blade into the centre fist. Add some chain around the wrist
One nice looking Chaos dread. Attached is a view of it whilst still a work in progress, I'll try and get some shots of it completed & painted. (Sorry about the blurred image)
So, for a Chaos Conversion, think spiky, barbaric and insane. Can't go wrong.
