With hopefully some time to finish my Chimera and Russ up ahead, I started some research on extra armor modifications possible on those two vehicles. With only side skirts available for the Chimera (Forgeworld) and no pieces whatsoever for Russ, I found my options quite limited… What is worse, I could not really find any pics of similar work done by anyone else. Yes – Russ is a heavy tanks with lots of steel up front, but the model itself should represent the upgrade.
So here I am, thinking of possible way to bulk up the armor on both pieces. With Russ being a “used” piece with paint already on it, I do not want to redo too much of it, but the Chimera is only primed so far. For Russ, I will put one big plate up front, below the HB/Lasscannon mount and hope that it will do the trick. With Chimera, I am thinking of surrounding the turret with a line of spaced armor, similar in manner to what today’s military vehicles have on the sides and/or turrets.
Do any of you have ideas, pictures, recollections of similar mods being done by someone else? I will post any pics as soon as I have them, as well as place the finished pieces in the Gallery section. Till then – let me know what you think!
I just use the track guards... But that spaced armour around the turret looks neat. I don't like FW's extra armour either, but I think adding square bits of armour to the ides or something works.
One thing you could do is what some crews in WWII did and just sandbag the crap out of the outside of their tanks.
The simplest and probably most effective way is to just glue the excess tracks on the sides of the tank, especially on the right side of the rotating turret mount where there is a lot of room. It looks very realistis once you have all that empty space filled up by stuff.
I bitz ordered the sandbags from the old exterminator turret and threw on some sandbags from the IG heavy weapon sprues. That and a bunch of ruck sacks, fuel drums and any other appropriate bitz laying around.
Blais's Paint Studio-Getting broken armies good soft scores since 2009
Yes, these two samples above show exactly the spaced side skirts that I was thinking about for my Chimera. However I found an interesting bit at my friend's bit box and used that for now - will post pics soon... For the Russ, I have seen the sandbags but am not a big fan of those. Leftover track links on the sides - yes, have seen those but again, seems not to my likening (am I picky or what?!?). For now I just added that extra armor plate on the bottom of the hull and will stop at that. Will post pics soon as well.
What I really hoped though was that someone has added extra armor plates on most of the front and sides of Russ. Well, at least the turret. I like some of the new FW Death Korps tanks - they doo look more massive and armored than original GW stuff...
