Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey whats up? guys I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on painting Dark Elves. I'm looking to do a purple army but still have a unique look. If anyone can help at all it would be great.
Thanks ya'll laters.
I'm just in the middle of painting a Dark Elf spear men regiment, so I might be able to give you a couple of tips . For the purple, I've been base coating with lich purple, then adding a little bleached bone and painting the raised areas on the cloth, and keep adding more bleached bone until you have a very bright colour on the highest part of the cloth. Here's an example from the Games Workshop website.

As for making your army look unique, why not try some freehand on the shields? Dark elf runes look really good on a black shield, and can really make your army stand out. Here's an example of a shield I painted.
Thanks for the help mate. not the best at free hand but who cares i'll give it a go lol.
If you are really messing up your free hand badly... Cheat. :shifty:
Whenever i really cant get something right that im freehanding i very lightly pencil it on first. That way you can just trace over the lines you've made and the outcome will be alot better. You also dont need to worry about botching it up because it only takes a tiny amount of paint to cover it up unlike if you were doing freehand, say in black over white. To get a smooth look then you amy have to do a few layers of white to cover the black.
I plan to live forever, so far so good.
Thanks that helps heaps I finished a couple of warriors that are all painted differantly i'll post them all soon so you can judge them =-)
When I first started doing Dark Elves, I asked the guy in my GW if he had any ideas for paint schemes. One thing he mentioned is that because they're Elves, you can use more fantasty colours on them than you would say with the Empire or with any 40k race.
It was a bit of a risk, but I decided to do all my Dark Elves with blue skin (not completely blue, more like flesh with blue highlights). It made it look pretty individual, and the effect wasn't too bad either.
Just a thought =)
Thanks you do have a point there.
I did my DE army in the Purple scheme. To make it a little 'unique' i just did a few units in my own colours.. My harpies are a greenish colour. My black dragon is light purple, etc..
I have a tonne of pics in the DE gallery here on LO if you want to check them out. As someone mentioned, runes on the shields are a good idea. My highborn in the gallery has another example of that, but different to the one shown above.
To be honest, if I could do it all over again, I would probably go against the purple scheme and do a more Dark red colour.
