(moved from Modelling forum)
When searching for suitable wings for my warriors, I came across a suggestion for this site: Realistic Fly Tying . Not only did the dragonfly wings seem perfect for warriors, the other wings seemed well suited for other tyranids.... like gargoyles.
The top wings should be about 1 to 1 1/4 inch long... and 10 sets are only $5. So I was thinking, a box of gaunts runs about $28 (from discount mail-order stores, like battlewagon-bits) So, 8 hormagaunts would be half of the box contents, $14. Plus wings would be another .50 each. All you need now are flying bases, and you're set. So total per model should be 1.75 for the model itself, .50 for the wings, .25 for the flying base.... $2.50 per, not counting shipping.
As a test, I cut out a pair of wings (approximate size), and slapped a fleshborer on one of my hormagaunts. Not bad:

sounds like a cool idea. why not use both the hormie and termie bodies to save some money. you could just reposition the legs on the termies and use any extra fleshborer bits you have laying around for the extra bits.
That is not dead which may eternal lie,
for in strange aeons even death may die.
Great idea. Do you plan on using paper for the wings? Or is the paper just the experiment?
Spambot kill tally. . .337
The paper was just an experiment. Also, I went ahead and reassembled the hormagaunt, back to his original pose. I was planning on using the wings from the link I posted... it'll be a while before I'll do this though, as I'm moving relatively soon.
Anyway, I found this site: Cygnus X1 Warhammer 40,000 Tyranid Site - Picture - with some pics with gargoyles with the same idea...
Why are you mounting the wings on the back?
I might be a hardliner and a purist here, but tyranids are supposed to have 6 limbs, so why not cut away the middle "arms) and mount the wings there?
Also, gargoyles have bioplasma and that should probably be represented on the models, you might be able to use some genestealer bits?
Other than that, very nice work and a very good idea.
