Okay well I know when Lord of the Rings was first released Games Workshop had a strict policy about not mixing the models with Warhammer miniatures for conversions etc.
I ask because I am currently entertaining the idea of providing a Wood Elf unit with shields that once belonged to Men of Gondor as I feel the symbol of the White Tree would look far from out of place in my army.
However I would like to know for certain what (if any) restrictions I would have with regards to using these models in stores and tournaments.
i believe they are a bit more relaxed on it now a' days. i have seen several hive tyrants using the balrog wings. plus the fact that they now sell the bits suggests its o.k. i'm sure they would definately allow it in most GW hobby center(unless its run by a total prick!( ), but not sure 100% about all tournaments. i did once ask to use a model with lord of the rings bits in a tournie, however, and they were cool about it.
That is not dead which may eternal lie,
for in strange aeons even death may die.
If you check the current GW grand tournament rules packs (*here*, for the uk) then you should find their current 'official' stance on combining the two ranges.
If I remember correctly, it is now completely fine to combine the two, but because of licensing agreements you cannot have any models that feature LotR components photographed for use in White Dwarf or GW online, and I am not sure if you are able to win any "Best Army" awards.
Most people don't have a problem with them, it's only an issue at GW-organised tournies I believe.
Hope that was helpful for you
