Welcome to Librarium Online!
Wanted to pick people's minds on this one. This is GW's new idea of basing the new bikes that are coming out for Ravenwing. If you look carefully and see how large that base is its unbelievable! its the monster base from fantasy in the middle with a large HW base from guard cut in half. So if your attacking the bike or if its a character it can contact/be contacted by at least 6+ regular sized models?? What the heck are they thinking when the bikes fit nicely on the HW size base by itself with plenty of room
Warhammer 40,000 - Dark Angels
Granted if you look through the examples their pretty nice by the black gobo guys but come on the size of the thing is ridiculous for drawing lines of sight
40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
Hmmm... I've just been putting mine on WFB cav bases... seems to me if they needed to be on a certain base size, they'd come with bases, yeah? Only reason I've been putting them on the cav bases is for stability... and because I've got a ton of them.
I'm going to give this a shot with the termy size base and square equivelant (spelling?). That is roughly what I got from the tutorial and it shouldn't be that big. We will see?
It's not that huge really. It goes out maybe a half inch around the model. My bases are a lot worse. I bought a pack of "extra large round bases" which are 60mm and are honestly quite nice. The bike actually fits on it and it's not even big enough for the attack bikes to fit on...
But, in the 40k rulebook, it does say that you can put models on larger bases, just not smaller ones, so it is perfectly legal. It also makes the transport trap tactic a lot easier (put bikes outside the access points of a transport, if you at least get a penetrating hit on the thing, the guys inside HAVE to come out, and since they would be within 1" of the bikers, they are automatically killed).
I honestly think that for such a big model that is a lot of points, bikes should have way bigger bases than those supplied by GW.
If you are RW it makes your scout move almost impossible since you don't have Skilled Rider. It is hard enough to move the bikes in and around terrain on a cavalry base. This Monster Base will ruin you.
Do you even need to have your bikes on bases? None of my ork bikers came with them so I have never used them. The chunky wheels are wide enough to keep the bikes balanced ok.
I suppose these big bases make great display stands for the figures (and therefore boost sales when used in the shops) but don't seem very practical for gaming. Can you imagine trying to squeeze ten of them between terrain in a Cities of Death battle!
If you drop a shell on your foot an it don't urt, your shoota aint big enough!
I know for sure now you are thinking of the wrong size bases. I just made 6 of them for my soon to be my first ravenwing troop choice. They are the same length as the bike bases just a little widder. Plus the will look a heck of alot better with the rounded ends. 99.9 % of your 40k minis are on round bases anyways so it fits better. As soon as I get home I will take a pic next to a bike and post it here for all to see that GW came up with a good quick base conversion.
I have only cut and glued so far. Just need to fill minor gap or two and then figure out how to build up the bases (terrain wise).
