How does one go about getting the mud effects on tank treads? I have been pondering this and wanted to know what suggestions that I could get from here.

i would suggest heading over to undeadair's thread. he gave his technique for mud here (Undeadair's Imperial Guard WIP). reply number 20.
A mix of mud coloured paint, PVA glue, water and flour worked ok when I used to make WW2 models. You can either paint it on for splatters or just dip your vehicle in a tub up to its mudguards for that "driving through a swamp" look. Drybrush it with a lighter shade of matt paint for a dry mud effect or give it a coat of varnish for a wet look.
