I've been looking at Empire Militia models and I was wondering how possible it would be to mix Militia and Cadian bits together to make sort of non-standard Guardsmen? I'm mainly looking to take Militia models and put lasgun arms on 'em, maybe the odd IG helmet -- the bulk of it would be Militia. The only problem is the shoulder pads on the lasgun arms. I'd want to get rid of those, but it doesn't look like it'd be easy.
Anyone else have experienced in doing this sort of mixing?

I've taken the shoulder pads off a couple of times, using clipper to start, then finished off with files. It was a pig of a job, ok on one or two, but if I had to do a whole platoon I would'nt bother.
You could try chopping the guard arms at the elbow/above the rifle butt ,and splice them onto chopped down empire arms. Poss.
I made 20 of these exact conversions. I thought of taking off the shoulder pads but then realised that theyd just be empire models with lasrifles. So i put the arms on them straight. I gave them all helmets apart from 4 with helmaets on the belt and 4 with cadian breastplates. The shoulder pads hellp to bulk them out as the empire militia are slightly smaller than the guard models.
As for taking off the shoulder pads its easy. brace the arm so the top of the shoulder pad is away form you. Get a chunky knife and hook it under the edge then cut away from yourself. This is the least effort and also the safest way. it takes a bit of work but dont do the cleaning up till after the arms are on the models otherwise the shoulders go funny shapes.
(if you want some sample pics i could get some for you)
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

What you just described is the traditional way of making lost and the damned traitors. I guess it could work for loyalist guardsmen too. (beards and trenchcoats for the win!)
