How would you undercoat? By brush or by spray paint?
I usually prime with spray paint (white) then black line the recesses of the mini. Although sprays don't reach every spot on the mini which is when i break out a cheap brush and prime the spots that were missed.
Yep, that is how I do it as well. The only thing is that I use chaos Black as primer, for those spots I've missed.
so, to speek I use both, but spray gets 10 or 20 figuers primed quicker than doing it by hand.
If Wolves were meant to fly, wouldn’t the Emperor have given them wings?
I'd say: Use spray, but very lightly! If you spray too much or from too close, you got a nasty "orange skin" effect. After a light spray priming, take out your brush, take your paint, dilute a lot and try to get as uniform an undercoat as possible, and don't forget: use extremely liquid paint!
Also, as opposed as what a lot of people do: Don't use black undercoat unless:
- You paint a metalic army.
- You paint a Black army.
- You paint a fur/flesh army.
Barring this, you should always use white undercoat: Colours are killed by a black undercoat. Black will darken/flatten any colour put over it. Ok, you can use this effect, if you want to have a somber/grey looking army (say, an imperial guard army that should look dirty and all), but if you want colour, go for white. Most coloured armies look drab because of this: People mainly use black undercoat...
I usually basecoat a model with black if your going to have the model be a darker color like a chaos model. If its going to be a lighter color i usually base with white. If you use a brush to basecoat, take your basecoat color and just try to cover everything with it unless your going to have something like a chainsword which you dont need to basecoat. If you use spray paint do the smae only with a can.
