Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi all. I am working on a large display for this years model train show in Christchurch, New Zealand. Train show i here you ask, well it gives me a chance to display my terrain building abilities and its a new way to play with trains. The public a few years ago loved it.
Anyway, heres my plan:
I will be having four boards, each with a different theme. A raised removable monorail will go through each board. You can see the basic layout below:
I am about half way with construction on the jungle and trench boards but what i would like help with is my idea for a Slaanesh daemon planet.
I made this quick sketch showing my basic ideas. I am going for a giant tentacle look with pink lava rivers. The tentacle/column things also have a definate phallocentricism. Any ideas or criticisms are most welcome as to how to make this better, or if i should go with it.
Cheers, Inquisitor Earl
The Slaanesh concept looks good but I think you could make it more complex. Little overhangs and so on for the trains to move under. A way to make this kind of stuff easily is with PVA + tissue paper.
Basically get loads of tissue paper and rip it up and dump it in a bowl. Then squirt PVA all over it and mix it with water. Once stirred up you will have a bowl of sludge. You can take chunks of it and squeeze it with your hands into whatever shape you desire.
It is best that it be squeezed tightly so that most of the liquid drains out of it or else it will take forever to dry. To dry it put a plastic bag on a tray and leave it on this in a dry place. The glue won't stick to the plastic.
Then when dry it can be given a coat of PVA to make it smooth. The effect is a kind of smooth and organic looking substance which will have plenty of texture for drybrushing etc. It is best to work with a fair amount of newspaper and old clothes as it can get rather messy while you make the stuff.
This is a good idea for a board. The only thing I would recommend is to make a few shorter, wider pieces for gaming purposes and for a more interesting look. Maybe a hill with lots of smaller pink tentacles coming out to make it look like a porcupine or pincushion.
You could add two tentacles "mingling" to make an arch for the monorail/anything else.
hehe, mingling, hehe.
Turtles For the Turtle God!
Shells For the Shell Throne!
I worked on the board a bit more today and actually made 3 little tentacles that are a bit wider (baby tentacles). Thanks for the input LittleBlueMan. I will definately make 2 mingling tentacles, its' just so slaanesh!
Thanks for the pva+tissue paper idea Leech. I was wondering what to use to make an interesting texture. I will give it a go.
I will take some photos tomorrow to show you guys what ive done.
Ive been working on my boards a bit. Below are photos of what ive done so far. I will sand the tentacles tomorrow and try the tissue paper and pva technique for texture. Please note, the baseboard in the image is not the one i will be using. Thats for the forest board. I have to buy some more polystyrene to make the lava base.
As you can see, i have made the tentacles on separate stands so its all movable for gaming. I can all 9 or just a few depending on the game. These boards are quite narrow but are good for 400 pt games that i like to play.
I also have a shot of progress on my trench board for this display.
As always, comments and criticisms are welcomed.
Your concept is wonderful! I love it! Do you have any pictures or sketches or links to the model train you will use? I would enjoy seeing it. Thanks,
That battlefield with them trenches is awsome.
I like the Slaanesh tentacles too, but the trenches...mmm...trences...mmm... sorry *stops drewling* the tentacles. Why not have a couple of them being domesticated? Attach chains with hooks (Chaos vehicle sprue) trying to keep them in place. That'd help getting the painfull part of Slaanesh through.
May I ask how you'll make the different pieces come together and make one landscape? Or do you aim to keep them seperated in an "edged" manner?
Really interesting and lovely work, I'll keep my eyes on this thread to see your progress.
Hey Andusciassus, thanks for the compliments. It helps with motivating me to work more on the boards. Ill get some more photos tomorrow of what ive been doing.
The idea about the chains is great. I will definately do that on one of them.
My plan is to separate the boards with painted backboards. The train will travel through tunnels in these, hopefully screened by scenery where possible. I'm thinking of hiring a smoke machine and using lights plus sound so this will add to the effect.
The trench is my favourite, its for my Shriven LatD army (out of First and Only). I plan to make a couple of iron gibbets for the board that are defiled mechanicus icons with dead tech priests hanging by chains.
A note about the train. I have one i made a few year back which is imperial, ill get a photo of that tomorrow. Im going to build a daemon train as well that has flames coming out the top and boiler, as well as chains and spikes.
Whoa - very nice - I especially like your trenches and the little support "ribs" that you created there. Also -might steal your chaos terrain idea - like it very much!
