Hey guys, so I'm quite new into the whole Warhammer/modeling scene, and I'm having a bit of trouble started with making scenery. In the Necron Codex, there's a section that talks about how to create the Necron Crystals. Evidently, the instructions make it sound quite easier than it is for someone like me who is unfamiliar with the proper techniques and/or tools.
So here are my questions. What type of foam/polystyrene do you use to make the Necron Crystals? Secondly, where can you find it? So far, I've had little success finding just what I'm looking for. Currently, I found some Styrofoam at a craft place, but it doesn't seem to be the right material. Its very porous and rough. I could see it being used as a base to put the crystals on, but not the actual crystal itself. I've also tried cutting up some packing foam. Its more on the "plastic" end of styrofoam than the "rough scratchy" type.
My apologies if I've repeated a previous post, though I looked through old threads and didn't find any answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much!
You want to try a home improvement store for the foam. Look for "insulation foam" either in pink or blue. It comes in fairly large sheets. Also, google "hot wire cutter" or "hot wire foam cutter" and you will see many places to order or purchase a cutter. Good luck, get some pics when you get going and let us see what you came up with.

what your looking for is pink insulation foam which can be bought from most home DIY etc... places. it comes in sheets about 1.5in thick, and in huge slabs about 2ft x 8ft. this will probably set you back... maybe $30 Australian (sorry, don't know the conversions) basically this is the stuff that goes right next to the brick work in most houses. its great for modeling because its light, strong, and can be easily manipulated and even sanded to make a smooth finish. then its just a matter of getting it the shape you want, basing it then painting it.
NOTE: DON'T USE A SPRAY PRIMER WHEN PRIMING THIS STUFF. it'll eat straight through it and all your hard work will end up as a pile of pink goo.

I picked up about 8 square feet of the stuff and have a few pieces drying. Once they're done being painted, I'll throw some pics up!
Thanks for the help!
i know that this isn't specifically what you asked for, but is in the same vein:

As an expert in scenery construction, I suggest that you use pink foam. This stuff can be found in diffent thicknesses (3/4'' and 2'') at most Home Depots or constuction material related stores. It cost about 15-20 for a 2'*8' piece but that will last you a long time, belive me. Buy the pink over the blue, in my opinion the blue is denser and doesnt make clean cuts that easy.
Then for your crystal project, I suggest that you go toa thrief store and buy some old steak knifes with serrated edges. These cut foam very well and will allow you to make the faces and angular tops on your crystals. For bases use foam core board. This stuff is cheap faom layered between two pieces of paper and can be found at many craft stores. Just cut out a base shape, beaval the edges so theres a smooth transition from the board to the base, and glue on your scenery.
Hope that helps you out a little.
