    500pt Starter Army. Any tips/changes?

So me and a few of my friends have been tossing around the idea of playing 40k for a while now and just recently decided we'd try it out with some 500pt armies, from poking around here this is what I’ve come up with.

    HQ:
    Reclusiarch: 155pts
Jump Pack, Terminator Honors, Artificer Armor, Plasma Pistol

    Troops:
    Tactical Squad: 90pts
    (4) Space Marine: Lascannon
    (1) Sergeant: Bolt Pistol & Close Combat Weapon

    Scout Squad: 90pts
    (4) Scout Marine: Sniper Rifle x3, Heavy Bolter
    (1) Sergeant: Sniper Rifle

    Fast Attack:
    Assault Squad: 164pts
    (6) Assault Marine: Plasma Pistol x2
    (1) Sergeant:

    Totals:
    HQ: 155
    Troops: 180
    Fast Attack: 164
    Total pts: 499

From what I’ve heard so far ill be fighting Tau most of the time, with the possibility of Necrons or Orks. Also, can anyone suggest some traits that would work well with this army?

Well let me know what ya think and thanks in advance, any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi there, it's not a bad list but I suggest a few changes equipment-wise

    1) I would drop the artificier armour on the chaplin,a 2+ save is nice but it's not worth the points and you asked about traits, well with the artificier armour points you give your assualt squad furious charge, i think the trait is Blessed be the Warriors.

    2) How about changing the Lascannon to a Plasma Cannon? At this points level, 40K is much more infantry orientated therefore the Plasma Cannon would be more effective. Though some anti-tank would be handy, so how about a missile launcher instead of the heavy bolter in the scout squad?

That's about it really, i hope this helps.

Sure some things could be tailored to preference but overal the list isn't bad. I do have two changes to suggest.

I'd give the Tactical squad a special weapon, like a plasma- or meltagun. That way you have a manoeuvrable squad that can support the Assault squad and/or take objectives.

The scouts would benefit more from a missile launcher if you decide to go with above suggestion, so you have some anti-tank. When you face Tau it'll also be what you need against those very annoying battlesuits.

Furious Charge is nice but not really needed. With the chaplain's Litanies of Hate the Assault squad already hits quite hard (and Tau die to them anyway). If you spare out those points they'd be more useful elsewhere IMO. Like for a veteran sergeant somewhere along the line.

Araith is right, here. Furious charge is probably overkill. Special weapons are a good idea but i think a Plasma cannon would be the best option for the tac squad.

Thank you both for the ideas, taking into account both of your suggestions this is the new list I came up with.

    HQ:
    Reclusiarch: 135pts
Jump Pack, Terminator Honors, Plasma Pistol

    Troops:
    Tactical Squad: 105pts
    (4) Space Marine: Plasma Gun, Plasma Cannon
    (1) Sergeant: Bolt Pistol & Close Combat Weapon

    Scout Squad: 95pts
    (4) Scout Marine: Sniper Rifle x3, Missile Launcher
    (1) Sergeant: Sniper Rifle

    Fast Attack:
    Assault Squad: 164pts
    (6) Assault Marine: Plasma Pistol x2
    (1) Sergeant:

    Totals:
    HQ: 135

    Troops: 200
    Fast Attack: 164
    Total pts: 499

I had originally planed to have a Missile Launcher in the scout squad but I saw that the Heavy Bolter and the Sniper Rifles had the same range and thought it would be more effective at dealing with the range of those fire warrior teams, which is why I put the Lascannon with the tactical squad to deal with the broadside that I know he’s going to try to bring (He loves broadsides). This combo does seem to be more balanced though and I like it.

Also I just found out yesterday that my other friend has finished his 500pt Necron army. How do you think this revised list will fair against them, as well as the Ork army to come?

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate it.

If your friends are only going to have 500 pt armies, you'll do fine. However i would've dropped one of the sniper rifles in order to give the Reclusiarch a power fist.

In any army, your HQ's need to be 'ace cards'. As with what i've done with my HQ units.

    Nice list!

I'd say this list will do good against your friends.

For the one point you have left, give frags to the chappie

    Have fun with your marines.

Against Tau and orks the sniper rifles should be quite effective. Maybe you won't kill many Fire Warriors but pinning them is good enough. As long as they don't blast you to pieces you can always assault them.
Broadsides are nasty, that lascannon would have come in handy against it. In the absence of the lascannon your best bet is to send some plasma in its way and/or to assault it.

Necrons are a different problem. Hope on some effective plasma fire, and focus your shooting and assaulting on bringing them down one unit at a time.
