I have recently been brought back into 40k since not having played a game since 3rd and have decided to pick up where i left off - my beloved Dark Angels. I have struggled writing a list that fits the theme that i wish to encapsulate for my strike force (due to the restrictive nature of combat squads and not enough points) so have decided to leave the theming to apocalypse levels of the game. For now though i have worked out this 1.5K list themed around the 6th company:
Company Master 115
power weapon, combi-bolter
8 Veterans 310
plasma gun, power weapon, power fist, combi plasma
Drop Pod 50
Tactical Squad 215
+5 marines, heavy bolter, plasma gun, power fist
Drop Pod 50
Tactical Squad 205
+5 marines, heavy bolter, plasma gun, power weapon
Drop Pod 50
I have only basic knowledge of the current working of 40k having only played fantasy for about 3 years, so the list may be entirely flawed, please rip it to shreds!
Not entirely flawed.
You might want to consider Razorbacks instead of the Drop Pods though as they are giving away 75 points just for turning up. If you aren't combat squadding your tac squads, then cheaper Rhinos will do. The Vets at 8-men strong (9 + Master) will need the Rhino to ride in, or a Razor and wait for casualties before embarking.
Unless that is of course you are really set on the deep strike theme.
Also, you really do need a las cannon or two in the mix, maybe on a Razor or in the Tacs.
Best of luck

You are really lacking in anti armor units. I would take either a las cannon on the dreads (with all its twin linked goodness) or a missile launcher for the tac squad.
Ive never found combi weapons to be worth the points but that is up to you.
Whirlwinds can work well, but three seems a bit much. There great against low toughness troops but against crons or other SM's they are not going to be too effective. If you drop the pods and 2 whirlwinds you can take a Land raider, great transport for your vets and some nice, hard hitting anti tank weapons. Just my two cents
Well knowing u play Fantasy i can see why all the whirlwinds. Now i like the idea for a drop pod for the rest of the tactical marines and the dread, but i would put ur Vets+Commander in a razorback and add a twinklinked lascannon. But i start moving the razorback into hell when the drop pods are loose and the whirlwinds did some damage.
