    1500 Point Space Wolves Army

I'm trying to figure out what army I actually want to play in 40k and I'm making lists to get feedback and to figure this out. I'm not neccissarily working just for a powerful army (wouldn't hurt though) but rather one that fits me and I'd like to play. So far, not so good. Now I'm trying Space Wolves.

    HQ-
Venerable Dreadnaught - Assault Cannon, Stormbolter, Extra Armor

    Wolf Priest - As Is

    Elt-
Wolf Scouts x4 - Bolters, Meltagun

    Trp-
    Grey Hunters x9- Powerfistx2, Meltagun
    Rhino - Extra Armor, Smoke

Grey Hunters x10- Bolters, Powerfist, Powerweapon, Plasmagun
    Rhino - Extra Armor, Smoke

    Blood Claws x10- Powerfistx2, Flamer
    Rhino - Extra Armor, Smoke

    Hvy-
Leman Russ Exterminator - HBx3, Extra Armor

Predator - Autocannon, Heavy Bolters, Extra Armor

Predator - Autocannon, Heavy Bolters, Extra Armor

I know my anti-tank is a bit low but the hope is to get melta and side shots with autocannon.

Advice, I don't really want to lower numbers but I don't know how to free up points without doing so.

Nice Hq, I would leave as he is,

    Wolf Priest - As Is
I like having a frost axe but they're expensive, I'd leave how he is

    Elt-
Wolf Scouts x4 - Bolters, Meltagun
I'd try and put one more man in, and then another meltagun, this will give the squad much enhanced chance of blowing up tanks,

    Trp-
    Grey Hunters x9- Powerfistx2, Meltagun
    Rhino - Extra Armor, Smoke
Fine but I perfer to use mine as fire support for the blood claws, since you can't charge out of a tank, but thats PP. Since this is what you've in the second squad I'd drop this for a second blood claws squad,

Grey Hunters x10- Bolters, Powerfist, Powerweapon, Plasmagun
    Rhino - Extra Armor, Smoke
Fine, I'd lose the power weapon though

    Blood Claws x10- Powerfistx2, Flamer
    Rhino - Extra Armor, Smoke
Cool, never thought of using a flamer for these to by pass low BS

    Hvy-
Leman Russ Exterminator - HBx3, Extra Armor
Its uniquely space wolf but not very effective, the blood claws are much better at AI then this, its also quite expensive,

Predator - Autocannon, Heavy Bolters, Extra Armor
With the lost points I'd put lascannon side sponsors on, to get more long ranged AT

Predator - Autocannon, Heavy Bolters, Extra Armor
    Same as before,

If you do lose the GH and swap for BC's aswell as the extermintor and only upgrade the preds for AT this leaves a lot of points to play with, try and squeze in another BC squad, posibly not at full strengh though, hope this helps, and post if you make any changes,

Ok so if you are a regular reader of space wolf army lists then most of what I have to say will be old news, if not then here you go.

Ven Dread: He could really use a drop pod, even with his added durability for being venerable he will have a hard time making it to an effective range before being eliminated.

Wolf Priest: I would hightly suggest that you go for a WGBL with storm shield & lightning claw instead. It is the exact same cost as the wolf priest but will deal out more kills on anything with T3 or more even with one less attack. As for the inv save, generally your HQ will be joined with a squad so taking hits at range is not generally an issue so the storm shield becomes effectively the same as the Iron Wolf Amulet.

Wolf Scouts: If you can find the points then put 2 plasma pistols on them too or melta bombs, since they will usually be attacking the rear armor of vehicles this will really add to their killing power. Personally I never field these guys with out 2 power weapons too since I face a fair number of non-vehicle armies and that way they are still effective.

The grey hunters generally look good though I prefer 8 man squads, but you said you wanted to keep the numbers so I will try to leave that alone.

The Exterminator is not worth is for the points you are spending…go for a Daka predator (auto cannon & 2 heavy bolters) you will be spending 85 less points for only loosing 1 heavy bolter & some armor.

As you stated your tank hunting is low so I would convert one or both of your current predators to have lascannon sponsons.

So I would go with something like this:
    HQ:
Ven Dread w/ Drop pod - 190 pts
    WGBL w/ 1 LC, Storm Shield, & Frag - 96 pts

    Elite:
    Wolf Scouts x4 w/ 2 power weapons, 1 melta gun, & melta bombs - 102 pts

    Troops:
    Grey Hunters x9 w/ 2 power fists, 1 melta gun, & 6 bolters - 199 pts
    -Rhino w/ extra armor & smoke - 58 pts

    Grey Hunters x9 w/ 1 power fist, 1 power weapon, 1 melta gun, & 6 bolters - 194 pts
    -Rhino w/ extra armor & smoke - 58 pts

    Blood Claws x10 w/ 2 power fists & flamer - 170 pts
    -Rhino w/ extra armor & smoke - 58 pts

    Heavy:
Predator Destructor w/ Lascannon Sponsons & extra armor - 130 pts
Predator Destructor w/ Lascannon Sponsons & extra armor - 130 pts
Predator Destructor w/ Heavy Bolter Sponsons & extra armor - 115 pts

    Total: 1,500 pts

You can only have 1 melta gun in a wolf scout squad.

I would disagree with the "so far, not so good" bit. You have exactly the right idea about how to select an army. I applaud your patience and the drive to find an army that fits. Hopefully Space Wolves will be the one. Let's have a go at the list.

    HQ-
Venerable Dreadnaught - Assault Cannon, Stormbolter, Extra Armor

    Wolf Priest - As Is
Two excellent choices. Typically I would suggest a drop pod for the Dread as a way to get him into the action, but there is certainly nothing wrong with him drudging along pumping away with that AC.

    Elt-
Wolf Scouts x4 - Bolters, Meltagun
The scouts have bolt pistols and cc weapons, not boltguns. A nice unit otherwise, cheap and effective.

    Trp-
    Grey Hunters x9- Powerfistx2, Meltagun
    Rhino - Extra Armor, Smoke

Grey Hunters x10- Bolters, Powerfist, Powerweapon, Plasmagun
    Rhino - Extra Armor, Smoke

    Blood Claws x10- Powerfistx2, Flamer
    Rhino - Extra Armor, Smoke
As one of your main anti-tank options is the use of melta weapons I would give each of these squads a meltagun as their special weapon and replace the powerweapon in the second Grey Hunter squad with a fist if you can find the points. Looks good as is though.

    Hvy-
Leman Russ Exterminator - HBx3, Extra Armor

Predator - Autocannon, Heavy Bolters, Extra Armor

Predator - Autocannon, Heavy Bolters, Extra Armor
Anyone with an LRE in their list is a friend of mine. They are the Fluffiest of the Fluffy and despite not owning one myself, I am a huge fan. Given that they are still available to us when the new codex drops, an LRE is my next purchase. The Preds are nice and cheap as they are, but if you could find the points, then lascannon sponsons would be a big help against armor heavy opponents.

    -

You mentioned dropping points. What total is this list at now? Not knowing how many points you need it's difficult to suggest what to drop, but you might lower your packs to eight members. I have always found that number to be an optimum and the reduction would give you some points to use on the minor upgrades that you may want to purchase for your predators and dread.

For a first time list you've done a fantastic job and again I am very happy to see you pursuing an army for it's flavor as much as its ability to win. I certainly hope you find one that suits you (even if it's not wolves.)

EDIT: How did two of you beat me to the punch?! Arrgg!

Plat, you leave that Leman right where it is. Powergamer. (He knows I'm teasing him) ((Or am I?))

They can upgrade to a bolter for free.

Ahhh….you are so right. Thank you for fluffing up my perspective and bringing me back on track. I always have to fight against my powergamer tendencies.

I had to pull out my free canadian pdf codex to double check you on this and I will be the son of a goat. I stand humbly corrected; they can indeed upgrade to bolters for free. I thought by now that I knew this codex front to back to front, but even I can't keep up with all of our unit options. I can't wait for the 5th ed codex to strip them all away!

After listening to you guys I found out how to change the list into something I like, replacing the GH CCW squad with Blood Claws and taking a tank hunting predator.

    HQ-
Venerable Dreadnaught - Assault Cannon, Stormbolter, Extra Armor

Wolf Priest - Wolf Pelt and Wolf Tail Talisman

    Elt-
Wolf Scouts x4 - Bolters, Meltagun

    Trp-
    Blood Claws x9- Powerfistx2, Flamer
    Rhino - Extra Armor, Smoke

Grey Hunters x10- Bolters, Powerfist, Powerweapon, Plasmagun
    Rhino - Extra Armor, Smoke

    Blood Claws x10- Powerfistx2, Flamer
    Rhino - Extra Armor, Smoke

    Hvy-
Leman Russ Exterminator - HBx3, Extra Armor

Predator - Autocannon, Heavy Bolters, Extra Armor

    Predator - TL Lascannon, Lascannons

I think that this is way more balanced than the previous list. I appreciate your input a lot guys and the Wolves of Russ may become my future army.

As far as getting rid of the Wolf Priest, I have the exclusive model that rocks (this means I have to find a way to us it.)

Also, the LRE is AWESOME and one of the main things that attracted me to the space wolves.

Glad we could be of service.

The list looks good, and may your Exterminator cut down your enemies in a hail of bolter fire, just as Russ intended.

Glad to help...good luck with it, I totally understand the desire to use specific models I have fallen into that pit several times. I hope the wolves treat you well.
