just a few questions on squad compositions, your suggestions and criticisms are welcome.
ok, i'm going to be collecting a troop heavy list soon, so with anti tank marines, would it be effective to field a Rhino with a 10man Tactical Squad carrying a Multi-melta and Melta?
secondly, against terminators, and other such tough troops, i was thinking of taking a Rhino with a 10man Tactical Squad wielding a Plasma Cannon and Plasma Gun.
then for long ranged support and anti-infantry, i will take 10 Tactical marines who will combat squad. the first Combat Squad will consist of: a Sergeant, a Flamer and three Bolters in a Razorback with Heavy Flamers. the second shall be: four Bolters and a Lascannon.
have i covered every possible opponent? let me know of any changes/corrections you'd recommend.
and what HQ would you take?
thanks heaps in advance!
If your taking heavy weapons AND rhinos i would spend the extra 5 points just to have a razorback. Then combat squad everything. otherwise your heavy weapons are next to useless inside of a rhino driving around. They wont have many opportunities of shooting the enemy. Multi meltas are cool, but being heavy with a 24 inch range they just never seem to efficient for me. Plamas of all shapes and sizes are my best friend. Killing termies and most tropps is a breeze with them, as well as taking down light vehicles.
Your razorback squad sounds good. Lascannons are of course good. Didnt knnow razorbacks could take flamers? but seems good. The enemy(well me anyway) would take that out first turn if playing my orks, or just ignore it for a turn to target other things, then destroy it before it gets to my lines. Although if you had a few that wouldnt be much of a problem.
hope that helped,
hey Nox that helped heaps!
my original thought with the multi melta was put it in a Rhino. then, on turn one, drive maximum distance, pop smoke and then Combat squad the Marines inside, so that next turn my opponent will have to decide between shooting a rhino with 5men inside or the multi-melta (which is hopefully within 24 inches by now).
but i'll happily switch the rhino for a razorback and the multi-melta for a lascannon.
so you think the Sergeant, Plasma-cannon, Plasma-gun and seven Bolters in a Rhino is a good idea? or should i take a Razorback with Auto-cannon and twin-linked Plasma-guns?
all up, what i want is a good, flexible core of troops for my army. and i hope to be able to play games with 4 Tactical Squads and be able to prove their worth as the greatest troops in the 40k universe. so with those afore mentioned changes, do you think they'd be able to handle all comers?
oh, and Nox, what HQ do you recommend? i'm thinking a Chapter Master with CC Honour Guard. but is that too pricey?
For an HQ i always take a chapter master. I love the Orbital he comes with. Even for one shot i find it useful. throw a power weapon on him and hes good to go. My other choices are Pedro and Sicarius. Pedro rocks, making Sternguard scoring is the best i could ask for in the list i use. Generally consists of 2-3 tac squads, 2 sternguard, and 1-2 scout squads with tellion for kicks.
The lascannon/TL plasma is what i would take instead of TL lascannons. Just seems more useful and versatile. Though id much rather just take the razorback standard.
Your plan of running up rhinos fast and popping smoke is pretty standard, like it a lot. And the plan to jump out in combat squads is solid. Making your oponent have to think harder about what to shoot is always the best way to have them make simple mistakes.
My vote is for standard razorback if your taking heavy weapons, and leave the heavy behind to pop shots(lascannon, or plasma cannon for me). If you want rhino id just grab the free heavy weapons(rockit of multi melta). Rockits are a very versatile weapon, good for multiple battlefield roles. Maybe mix it up in your army with rhino and razorback.
If your going to take sternguard then id go Pedro Kantor for an HQ choice, and maybe even write up fluff for your own character in your chapter that use his profile. Then throw the sternguard in a rhino or drop pod.
Either way you go in the tac squads is a good choice. Its hard to make a composition that will fail with marines. all you have to do is remember to use them in the right spot.
yeah, so you recommend taking razorbacks where i can?
i like that alot, my only qualm was whether or not my multi-meltas and plasma-cannons would be in range from turn 1. that's why i was thinking of taking rhinos for the two squads which had the plasma-cannon and multi-melta, so that those two heavy weapons would be close with my opponent. but i'm not sure, would they be in range if i left them in my deployment zone? also if i took them, i'd drop them off at an objective, then roll my other guys up to contest my opponent's objectives.
oh, and, just out of curiosity, is Telion a HQ? my instinct says no, but i'm not sure. because it'd be pretty cool to have telion with 8x snipers and a missile launcher for my HQ.
but i reckon i'll go with a Chapter Master with Honour Guard, in a Rhino or Land Raider? (i like the Damocles Command Rhino, real fluffy. but what does it do? is there any point in taking it?) also i think it would be a good idea to make this unit really strong in melee, but i haven't the faintest idea of how i should equip them. what do you suggest?
thanks heaps for your input, Isao Nox, its really helpful!
PS, i know there is a Razorback variant, and i have the impression that it is armed with an autocannon and twin linked plasma guns, or is it a lascannon with twin linked plasma guns?

Don't hesitate to take Missile Launchers in your 10-man squads; they will save you heaps of points and will be very effective en masse. Also, Meltaguns will be a solid addition for the Combat Squads in your Razorbacks, since they are also cheaper than before.
As far as the Razorback goes, I'm pretty certain there is no Autocannon available. However, you can take an Assault Cannon on it if you want, which is pretty awesome.
hey, Lost Nemesis, i know what you mean about the missile launchers, but i thought the MM and HB were also free?
Im sorry to point this out.. but Im pretty certain that you cant split your tacticals the way you plan to do... Either they are split from the start in which case they can't be deployed together in the same rhino or they are taken as one unit in the rhino (which cannot split at any time during the game).
Every time they are deployed you can split them, I'm not sure if this includes being deployed out of tank
