$200 Army Challenge: Guard (1000 competetive)

So I'm participating in an interesting event at my LGS, the $200 army challenge. Sounds exactly like what it is, you spend $200 on an army and then duke it out after it's assembled. I decided upon Guard, specifically Guard Infantry, seeing as how I wouldn't be able to afford really any tanks whatsoever.

    What I picked up was:
Three (3) Cadian shock troop boxes,
    One (1) Cadian battleforce,
Two (2) Cadian heavy weapon squads,
Three (3) Cadian heavy weapon teams,
    One (1) Commissar,
    One(1) Sanctioned Psyker,
    Two (2) Cadian Officers,
    And One (1)Cadian Command Squad.

This army is pretty different from anything I run normally, seeing as how it lacks availability to basilisks, demolishers or plasma weapons. Still, I think I can have fun with it. Especially since I'll most likely be running the largest army in the store! More guns will just have to make up for the lack of bigger guns I guess. In any event, here's the list:

Doctrines: ID, CoD, Drop Troops, Psykers, Veterans
    HQ [218]
    JO, HI, ID … 70
    Commissar, PW ... 45
    Vet, Banner … 11
    Psyker
    3 Guardsmen
    … 138

    Mortar Team [80]

    Elites [204]
    6 Hardened Vets, AC … 68
    6 Hardened Vets, AC … 68
    6 Hardened Vets, AC … 68

    Troops [578]
    JO[40]
    4 Guardsmen
    10 Guardsmen, GL, ML … 83
    10 Guardsmen, GL, ML … 83
    10 Guardsmen, GL, ML … 83
    … 289

    JO[40]
    4 Guardsmen
    10 Guardsmen, GL, ML … 83
    10 Guardsmen, GL, ML … 83
    10 Guardsmen, GL, ML … 83
    … 289

My standard leadership setup of a HI'd JO with ID, a Commissar and a Banner, though this time I've opted for a Psyker. Why? a few reasons: (1) I picked up the Commissar and the Psyker as part of a package deal for $15, (2) it's an ablative wound in my command squad, and (3) I've never actually used one and am interested to see how it works.

The mortar team is to (try to) make up for the lack of basilisks. I need something to coerce my opponent to rush my gunline and nothing says "run towards all those guns" like LoS-ignoring barrages.

The veterans with autocannons are mostly for skimmer popping and general crowd control, if I don't deep strike them I'll probably just sit them on the flanks and blast stuff. Thought long and hard about swapping those ACs for heavy bolters... still might, I'm undecided.

My troops selection is the same as usual, except I'm using grenade launchers... ugh. Oh well, nobody is using much armor in this tourney so I suppose I'll survive. The usual six missile launchers should do me for anti-tank.

Any ideas on how to improve the list using the models I have available?

That's a cool idea for an event. I don't think I could afford dropping 200$ at once, but still would be fun.
Can't really comment on the army list, because I have no idea how IG's work. But let me know how the tournement goes.
    Good luck.

    It looks pretty good overall

    Just a couple things-

    1. Command squads only consist of 4 guardsmen not 5.

    2. You dont really need the banner, spend the points on more power weapons or a HW

One of the guardsmen has been upgraded to a veteran. So there's 4 regular guardsmen and one veteran.

Banners are probably the single greatest upgrade a command squad can get. 11 points for rerolls on Ld10 for squads within 12"? How is that not worth it? The squad will probably never see CC, the only reason I took the pw on the commissar is because I had an extra 5pts.

    - actually no, it upgrades a existing guardsman to a veteran, it doest add another one

Also, come on man, im offering advice, just take it or leave it, you dont need to criticize it. I see your point with banners. Now, even if you dont think CC will happen, always prepare for it. It comes on you faster then you think.
Never underestimate the enemy (as in dont think you can stop them from getting to your lines, sometimes theyll get through)

Protip: buying directly from 99% of LGS or GW stores is essentially taking one in the arsehole. TheWarStore is a great place for minis, so is local classifieds like craigslist (or kijiki if you're a canuck like me). Stuff like that.

I hope that doesn't qualify as advertising.

    Army looks ok.

Looks like a great deal you got there. GW in Australia costs too much, esp. with the exchange rate falling and all....

    I got a deal from a mate:

    AUD $150 for:

    Brother Captain Stern
    8 Inq. Stormtroopers
    Inq. Lord Coteaz
    Normal Inquistor
    5 Grey Knight Terminators
7 Grey Knights with Psycannon + Incinerator
    Henchmen
    Vindicare
    Possibly other stuff
