I haven't played Marines forever,(since Rogue Trader days!) but while reading Horus Heresy books, I started getting fired up to run some. I picked up the Assault on Black Reach set and I'm trading my greenskins for a friend's marines. So I'll have double the AOBR marines, and I'm wondering what kind of list I can make with them. I ordered the new SM codex, but haven't received it yet, so I'm up for any suggestions/advice. Any help will be appreciated.
With a black reach(+ traded in orks) you can make a pretty core 1000 points force. Heres a list of what you get and an army list with it detailing the units.
2x captains(with power weapon + bolter)
10x Terminators(no special weapons)
20x Tactical Marines(2 flamers, 2 rockits)
2x Dreadnoughts (multi melta, CC arm)
Tactical Squad 1 ---170
Sgt. w/ CC weapon/pistol
Tactical Squad 2 ---170
Sgt. w/ CC weapon/pistol
Terminator Squad 1 ---200
4x Power Fist
Terminator Squad 2 ---200
4x Power Fist
This puts you at 990 points. Adding in an upgrade or 2 to the captain will put you at 1000 even. As a suggestion i would buy yourself another tactical squad and maybe a rhino or drop pod(for dread) for 1000 point games and drop a terminator squad. 2 is a bit much at 1000 unless you love them to death.
The only heavy anti tank in the army is the dreadnought at 12" from the enemy and the terminators in CC. The Missiles can hurt vehicles of course, but will need good rolls to do so. However the list is not bad as is.
Could use just the tac squad for the added troop and scoring unit. But with the combat squad rule you have 4 right now(5 man squads).
The dread has extra armour to keep it moving even if it cant shoot. This is very important for a walker that must be close to be effective. The drop pod i sugested above will help the dread get where it needs to be fast(first turn out of the sky!) and plant those shots at rear/side armour on enemy vehicles.
When you get the codex yourself take a flip through it and read up on what you are getting so you know how everything works and what you could benefit from getting later on.
Black reach makes a fine list. Good luck!
Thanks for the help Nox. In regards to heavy support, should I pick up a tank? predator or whirlwind? I don't know much about either, but figured one or the other might help. Also, should I upgrade HQ? What about an assault squad instead of another tactical? Thanks again
If you want a predator then you need to decide what it will do. If you want it to take out tanks and big nastys then lascannons is the way to go. IF you want anti infantry/light transports then stick with the standard Predator with heavy bolter sponson.
Wirlwinds can just be taken as is, and hidden in the back. Blast away at infantry squads, and bombard troops on objectives before your men arive.
Alternatively you could buy a named character. These are very hard hitters and add special rules for the rest of the army to make use of. You can also make up your own name for the character if you have your own chapter but what the rules he provides. The possibilities with these guys is amazing.
The HQ you get with the set looks like he could be sacarius but needs a plasma pistol i believe. Other wise there you go.
You could pick up a tank, I like the predator myself, sort of middle range between a heavy landraider and a light rhino, alternativly you could pick up a razorback or something to transport your troops in style! You could kit out the captains with hell fire rounds, makes his bolter usable, pretty good actually, wounding on 2+ is nice as, but then he can't charge in the same round so the model is abit odd.
Move forward and stay quiet brothers.

Thanks for the advice guys. I just got the new codex in the mail today, so I'm pretty stoked to get into it. I'm trying to decide on a chapter, so I've got some research to do.
