Just got my hands on some Imperial Guard and fancy giving it a go, however I will be playing Blood Angels and I'm a little unsure where to start with my list.
Here's a list of pretty much what I've got:
1 Command Team
3 x Heavy Bolter platforms
3 x Autocannon platforms
6 x Lascannon platforms
10 x Karskin Stormtroopers
~60 x Cadian Troops
Including a variety of plasma, melta and flamers.
1 x Hellhound
3 x Chimeras
7 x Leman Russ of different varieties
1 x Basilisk
Now I certainly have 1500pts but unsure which route to take regarding Blood Angels.
Any suggestions would be great because I do not even know which route to take, part of me even thinks I should do armoured company and make use of the russes.
P.S - I might be willing to spend a small amount of cash on some more models if a really feel the army would benefit.
Bring as many bodies as you can. I'm a big fan of the missile launcher. Unfortunately you don't seem to have any so I'm a little split on what I think you should do with your heavy weapons. Definitely bring as many as you can. I would almost take heavy bolters and autocannons because of their rate of fire and points cost and then take lascannons last. Unless you just really like mortars, like me, leave them. Don't leave a special weapon slot empty. Plasma's benefits against blood angels are kind of obvious. Flamethrowers will be great to for the counter charge. A few meltas in the mix might be useful against the "Furioso" dread I imagine he will deepstrike on you. Plasma can handle that too.
Some good advice already which pretty much covers most of what I'd say but to reiterate.
Heavy support three russes, you have thm so take them.
A command squad beefed for leadership (JO with HI and iron discipline, standard and mortar)
Line squads with heavy bolter plasma combos
a couple of support squads perhaps at least one of three lascannons for the landraider that may appear or any fast approaching dreds.
a couple of autocannons in the line squads for anti landspeeder duties and finally platoon commands with flamers
ooo nearly forgot meltas in a vet drop squad perhaps.
the stormies should only be taken if you have plasma for them if not leave them at home.
Dont forget to post up your prelim list so we can give more definite advice.
Hope that helps
Good advice given by Commisarlestat and YounGunner, however if you are planning to utilize your Leman Russes (which I advise you to do so) a good investment might be a Techpriest Enginseer. If you give him 4 technical servitors you can repair any destroyed weaponry or immobilization on a roll of 2+ for 90 points. If your opponent is fielding lots of terminators, a demolisher (if you have one) would be a good idea if not then lots of plasma in the line squads should be able to take care of them. When you make your list I would also advise you not to put too much wargear in the command squad but that’s just my view.
Good luck with the list.
I would go with either 2 Russ w/ Hbolters, and 1 Plas cannon Sponson Demolisher, or 2 Plas cannon Sponson Demolishers and 1 russ with HBolters.
the Plas sponson Demolisher is great for the dual threat it poses, at distance, the 2 Plas cannons are mean. At under 24" the Demolisher is meaner. It's also great at eliminating termies all round.
then a couple of infiltrating Lascannon/2plasma Vet squads. You need something able to crack his tanks/dreads. plus, if he goes for a vet squad, it's something that's NOT going for your gunline for a little while. If he ignaores them, you can keep firing with the lascannon.
I agree with outfitting the HQ as a leadership anchor. I like HSO, Standard, mortar, with Iron Disc. Then maybe set up one of the Platoon Squads with HI, and ID, for a secondary LD bubble.
I personally think the Techpriest to be overrated. You're better off gettting 2 Demo Charge Special weapon Drop Troop Teams for that price. they run up, and throw a pieplate. then they die.
I'd put plasma in your line squads with either Autocannon or HBolters. Missile LAunchers would be ideal, but it doesn't look like you've got a lot of them.
it might not be a bad idea to use another Platoon JO Squad for a Meltagun Drop troop choice for popping tanks either.
I'm not sure I'd use the Chimera, if I did, I'd buy them for your Ld Bubble command squads, then use them as Medium firebase tanks, with the Officer and mortar parked behind, so as not to get shot.
anyway, some food for thought from the crazy Light Infantry, all infiltrate, all the time guy.
Thanks for the responses.
You've certainly given me some food for thought.
I'll probably use 3 russes.
I've managed to scrap together around 7 infantry squads with: 3 Heavy Bolters , 3 Autocannons and 1 Missile Launcher (Had to botch that one a little).
Thinking of using a drop squad with meltas for any tanks and I've got some snipers now so might use ratlings for taking out characters.
I suspect I'll see plenty of jump troops and some special characters.
I just have to put some thought on how I deploy my Infantry.
Again thanks, I'll let you know what I come up with.
I like to build my missile launcher teams on single bases. I put together a guy holding the launcher and then a guy with a back pack and a spare missile. Think the last battle scene in "Saving Private Ryan" with the two Germans running through the smoke, one with the launcher. They look good in line squads. They are very mobile looking compared to the tripod mounted weapons.
This also save big bucks because you can turn around and build another heavy weapon team with the parts you have left and you have 6 heavy weapons for the price of 3. 3 of them just have to be the missile launcher.
