Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi there honored officers! I'm a somewhat experienced fantasy battle / empire player, about to start an incursion to 40k. Imperial Guard is the only one for me as Empire is in the fantasy setting I digged up the present codex and have been reading it through to get the basics of the guard. I'll be waiting for the new guard but maybe do some troops while waiting.
So here are the units I thought to start with:
Senior officer with personal retinue
Special weapons support with sniper rifles
Junior officer with personal retinue
Armored fist squad + chimera
I was thinking of buying the battleforce which gives me most of those units.
But here is the big question, how should I rig them up? I don't have the big rulebook yet so I don't know about the weapons. This is going to be a red desert camo (mars like) themed army with some fluff (not anything tallarn tho). Also my main and probably only opponent for now will be the orks. Maybe more of my fantasy battle group will elevate themselves to 40k in time
Personally, I like to rig my squads up with 6 guardsmen with lasguns, 2 with a heavy bolter, one guardsmen with a grenade launcher, and a sergeant with lasgun.
It's a personal choice. I like to mix this selection in each platoon that I take.
As for the armored fist squad, cant go wrong with a Melta/plasma gun! Depends on the role you want them to have. Do you want them to get out and potentially pop a tank? or take out some terminators?

The Wolf time is upon us!
Rep for the Rep God! Positive for the Positive Throne!
Armies: Space Wolves, Imperial Guard, Emperors Children, Necrons, Eldar
First and foremost: Welcome to the guard; good luck, and have fun... for the Emperor!
Desert is awesome. I see a lot of ice-world armies since the success of the Caiaphas Cain novels (and yes, I play one myself too), but not a lot of desert. The more variety the better, as far as I'm concerned. A particularly good look, for desert, is Warwick Kinrade's Armageddon Pattern Basilisk on forgeworld: Armageddon Pattern Basilisk with Tallarn Tank Commander
For general tips:
I personally like Heavy Bolters and Missile Launchers for line infantry squads, with heavier heavy weapons in their own dedicated teams. My current list (1500) has three missile launchers in the main line of battle, two anti-infantry Russes (3x heavy bolter) and a Basilisk, as well as an Autocannon squad and a Lascannon squad, both with Sharpshooters.
Regarding special weapons, I find they work well in platoon command squads as expendable counter-assault squads. Alternatively, a Junior Officer with a plasma pistol (optionally Master Crafted, if you're feeling flush), a medic, and three plasma gunners, makes for a very potent, if expensive and vulnerable, addition to your gunline.
Finally, I strongly recommend fielding armour in pairs. Your single AV14 will be targeted by all the enemy heavy weapons, and will quite probably not last more than a few turns. Two forces them to split their fire, and will leave you with at least one tank, and quite possibly two.
Thanks for the tips. I've actually lost my faith in the red desert theme. Instead I'm going for a verdant winter world theme, with main colors being dark and cold green, white and brown.
