Welcome to Librarium Online!
The call of the Emperor has lured me towars playing Space Marines on occassion but was wondering if what I have is going to be enough to form a viable fighting force?I have as follows:
2 sets of black Reach Space Marines (commander, 10 marines, 5 terminators, Dreadnaught)
2 x10 Tactical Marines
so splitting it up it looks like
40x Space Marines
A quick maths count shows this would equal about 1400 points without upgrades, but can this win as a BT army? If not can you guys suggest anything that might help me out? When it comes to Space Marines, I am but a lowly Guardsman in the strategy rankings.
not a bad list per se, though it all comes out to what you equip your squads with and what you're fighting. I'd say the list you have up there is a pretty sturdy starting point, but don't forget you must have the emperor's champion at that points level, so factor him and his vow in (though the most expensive, i like the "everyone hits on 3+" one) also the dreadnaught equipment choices are a big ?that you will need to work out. the stock pattern is nothing to sneer at certainly. also are your tacticals going to be ranged or melee? i suppose if you're using aught but blackreach they'd be ranged with missile and flamer, but consider getting some blisters of other special and heavy weapons for changing it up based on your opponent. Terminators are always solid, especially against swarms, though i'd definitely buy some blister heavy weapons terminators as well. AsC's are better than stormbolters any day and cyclone launchers are useful too.
hope i've been helpful. Black Templars are a pain to get the mix just right on. Looks like you're on the right track though.
Well along with the Black Reach sets I got 2 standard tac squad boxes as well as the Black Templar upgrade kit. So I was planning on having one squad use Pistols and CC weapons and the others more shooting orientated. The upgrade kit comes with a few other weapons (I don't know what they are mind you) so could mix and match, but what are the kmost universally useful weapon upgrades for Squads? Rocket Launchers seem to be highly spoken of, but what about the other weapon options?
My main opponents will be a horde Orkarmy or a highly AT Tau (2 Hammerheads one with Ion, other Railgun, 3 Broadsides). If someone used my other armies then myabe Warrior Heavy Nerons or anything Eldar.
I'm looking to try and make a more general themed army. I don't know squat about SM weapons and setups so any advice is always helpful.
well, given your opponents, heavy bolters might be better than missiles against some things. they'll autokill the basic troops of everything but crons and will get about the same number of wounds overall as missile launchers. If you're running into stiff oposition, a plasma cannon or plasmagun might be a good move as well, especially against necrons. you're down on heavy guns as templars don't get devastators, so consider hellfire patterning one of your dreadnaughts and giving it a lascannon and missile pack for some ranged support. Missile launchers are a good option against eldar and to some extent tau but i usually find that specializing a squad for killing something is more efficient than having a pile of general purpose squads. also consider outfitting your close combat squads with meltaguns. that way your melee squads can nuke large targets before they close in to melee for the kill. Basically just have some spare heavy weapons around for swapping in against certain opponents. missiles for instance are a poor choice against necrons, but useful against orks. Plasmacannons are great for crons and tau battlesuits but overkill on orks and most eldar infantry. Heavy bolters are a good all around weapon. they won't kill tanks but they make a mess of most infantry.
also, consider fielding a trio of speeders rigged out with bolters. they can chuck out a pile of anti- infantry punch for not a lot of points, leaving your infantry free to lob shots at tanks and monsters. or you can make them into a melta squadron and gun down tanks. last but not least, consider taking a vindicator tank. it's a nice fat blast of high power at medium range. good for all things necrons and it'll buy your dreads some time to close in.
