So, awhile before the 5th edition came out, me and a friend got into the game. We bought the Battle for Macragge set to get started plus some other boxes of units that looked cool at the time, before we read the rules. So basically, it took us this long to have enough time to play lol.
So here's my list so far with what I own, I'm looking to improve or expand it to the higher points range such as 750, then 1000 and so on. I will be mainly fighting the Tyranids and the Chaos Space Marines. And possibly Orks in the near future.
Space Marine Captain
Tactical Squad 10man x 2
Flamer/Missile on both
Vangaurd Veteran Sqaud -
Sgt: Power Fist
Troops: 1xPower Weapon and 1xLightning Claws
This list did fairly well in an Annilation game against the Tyranid, I ended up wining. I broke my two tactical sqauds into 4 combat sqauds. The Vanaguard sqaud are the models of the old veteran sqaud that they still sell, the metal ones, thats why they lack jump packs, and due to WYSIWYG I have to keep their weapons. Probably gonna want to replace them with the new models eventually. I realize the captain probably has a bit too much equipement for this point range, but I was just filling in some extra points to get to 650.
Anyways for the 750 pt jump, I was thinking about adding a Rhino and a 5 man squad of scouts with snipers and a missle launcher. I would also drop the artificer armour and the digital weapon. But I feel that I should probably find something to replace the fast attack with. So any suggestions? I would also like some direction as to where I could go with this for a 1000pt game. Since I am fairly new to the game, any advice would be helpful.
I was also thinking about buying the new starter set with a friend and taking the units out of that, since their seems to be about 585pts of them, and a fair variety of troops, and it also seems to be a good deal.
here's what I'd put as a list with yours as a starting point:
terminator chaplain =340 (I think)
5man terminator command squad
captain=385 (I think)
full command squad
razorback wit las cannon
notes:if you take the first choice cheaper but would be footsloging the whole game but these are termis so it woud'nt really mattter and are really effective against the amount of saves you need to take against orks.
the second choice will get into combat within turn 2 or so and powerful enough to take on choas marines that would get that 3+ save
2 tac squads the capt going forward and the 2 squads flanking
missle all snipe
these will be at the back sniping powerful heroes, carnifrexes etc
these sternguards have ap 3 rounds at 30" range able to take down chaos traitors easy
final notes: to add if your against:
hope i helped

After you pick this set up I recommend buying some Razorbacks, not only do they give you guys a way to trasnport themselves but they act as secondary tanks! And a Drop Pod for your Dreadnought would be a good investment as well.
Later on you should consider picking up a Devastator Squad Set, that way you can have access to more heavy weapons. As the points get higher the more likely someone will take tanks, or heavy armoured targets and the Devastator Squad will be a huge help!
