Newbie here, well let's just say the last time I played - space marines were all beaky and the rule book was called Rogue Trader. I did dabble in Tyranids just over a year ago but then I went off the boil and shelved that idea.
So I've been inspired by the Horus Heresy books to collect Space Marines and because I'm a poor painter with a masochistic streak I've decided that the Imperial Fists are the way to go - yay yellow!
Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice on the below lists and how to expand it further:
500pts (just less than I think):
HQ - Captain with Storm Bolter and Power Sword
Troop 1 - Tactical Squad (10 man) with Missile Launcher and Flamer
Transported by Rhino + extra armour
Troop 2 - Scout Squad (6 man) with Sniper Rifles
Fast Attack 1 - Land Speeder with Heavy Bolter and Multi Melta
I'm comming at this one as being biased towards the shooty but remaining manouverable and somewhat flexible
750pts (list above + the following):
Troop 3 - Tactical Squad (5 man)
Transported by Razorback + extra armour
Elite 1 - Dreadnought with Heavy Flamer and Close Combat Weapon
To be honest I just wanted a Dreadnought as soon as possible I'm not sure about the configuration, I see a Dreadnought as a lumbering close combat beast but I'm not ssure how effective it actually is at that role. Other than that, I figure the captain could squeeze into the Razorback with the small Tac Squad and the tactics would be roughly the same as at 500pts.
Thanks for your comments.
Get a power weapon or preferably a powerfist in here - otherwise you risk being bogged down in combat by something you can't hurt. I'd also get a Razorback for the first TS in the army, for a bit more flexibility and fire support.Troop 1 - Tactical Squad (10 man) with Missile Launcher and Flamer
Transported by Rhino + extra armourThe scout Heavy Bolter is my usual recommendation, just for the hellfire shells. Also, camo cloaks will massively increase their survival rate.Troop 2 - Scout Squad (6 man) with Sniper RiflesNice and versatile, but you might need to drop this to pay for the other upgrades.Fast Attack 1 - Land Speeder with Heavy Bolter and Multi MeltaThe trouble with this is you've not got any heavy or special weapons in here - bump them up to 10 men, get the free weapons (and a power fist). If you swapped transports for the first squad take the other option here.Troop 3 - Tactical Squad (5 man)
Transported by Razorback + extra armourYou probably won't be able to afford this if you take the full 2nd TS, but you could always drop the scout squad to free up the points (as you won't need 25 troopers in 750 points)Elite 1 - Dreadnought with Heavy Flamer and Close Combat Weapon
I've read a lot of the lists on this board and I've come up with the following:
Captain - 133pts
Relic Blade and Storm Bolter
Dreadnought - 160pts
Multi-Melta & Close Combat Weapon with Heavy Flamer
Drop Pod with Locator Beacon
Tactical Squad (10) - 250pts
7 Bolters, 1 Missile Launcher, 1 Flamer, 1 Sgt w. Power Fist
Dedicated Razorback w. extra armour
Scout Squad (6) - 116pts
5 Sniper Rifles, 1 Heavy Bolter, all Camo Cloaks
Land Speeder Tornado - 70pts
Heavy Flamer and Multi-Melta
Predator - 85pts
Auto Cannon with Heavy Bolters
Total - 804pts
Now I want to make this up to 1000pts so I have a bit of a dilema about the remaining 196pts.
Do I take a suitably tooled up Assult Squad? Or perhaps a basic Vanguard or Sternguard Squad with a transport. Or, as I like Dreadnoughts, another drop podded Dread?
Currently I plan to stick the Captain in the Razorback with the Powerfist and Flamer Combat Squad and go hunt something big. Missile Launcher Combat Squad take and hold an objective, likewise the scouts. Obviously the Dread in the pod deep strikes and the Land Speeder follows it's beacon in support. Pred provides support where needed.
You've only one drop pod currently, so adding a 2nd won't be that much of a use.
Drop one of your six scouts, round numbers are always easier to spend
Why not get a long ranged Venerable dread, maybe with 2xTL ACs? Or maybe Assault Cannon + TL-AC so you can deal with pretty much anything?
An Assault Squad with a Powerfist would be a useful addition. Your army has quite a lot of firepower so once you've softened the enemy up send the Assault Squad in for the kill.
It's a solid army you have there, versatile enough to deal with most situations.
Ok, so thinking about it, it'll probably be along the lines one of the following units:
Sternguard Squad (5) - 180pts
4 Bolters, 1 Combi-Melta, Sgt with Lightning Claw
Assault Squad (7) - 181pts
1 Flamer & Sgt with a pair of Lightning Claws and Melta Bombs
Dreadnought - 175pts
Extra Armour, Assault Cannon & Close Combat Weapon with Heavy Flamer
I guess it'll come down to how I prefer to play, but since this is my first army ( since pre-1990 ) I don't really know how I prefer to play! I'm leaning towards the Dread simply because I like the idea of them and the look of them. I always wanted one back in the day but I think the first models had been released just as I was stopping playing the first time.
I'd plan to hold this unit in reserve with the Land Speeder and Deep Strike them with the help of the first Drop Pod's locator beacon to assist any units that have got caught up or to contest any objectives that look well defended.
