Hey. I'm fairly new at this, have only played a few games at the 1K+ level, and should be playing my friends SoB army soon. It's a 1500 point limit, and I thought about bringing the following:
Standard , Plasma Gunx2 , Astropath , Medic
3x Infantry Squad (Grenade launcher, autocannon) :195
1x Infantry Squad (Grenade Launcher, Missile launcher): 70
2x Infantry Squad (Grenade launcher, lascannon): 150
3x Melta Gun , Chimera: 155
Total Troops: 630
Leman Russ- HB, Plasma Cannons: 190
Demolisher- (Lascannon, Plasma Cannons): 220
Ogryns (1 Bonehead, 3 Ogryns): 170
He plays a mech sisters list, usually 4 squads in Rhinos, jump cannoness, Seraphim squad and 2 Exorcist. He has an assasin (eversor I think) and Inquisitor he brings infrequently.
I know Ogryns aren't too popular, but I kind of like them. I'm not sure about the medic though, but it helps with the plasma. I was thinking of using 1 more mech vet squad and dropping 2 of the regular squads (I only have 2 Chimeras in total), but I haven't decided on it yet.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
To the list.....
HQ: Looks fine to me. Medics probably not needed but if you really want him then take him. I can see why you've taken him because of the plasma but 30pts is alot to be spending on a 50/50 chance of staying alive when you overhead. Why not just spend the 30pts buying two mroe plasma guns???
TROOPS: Plattons looking fine to me! I'd deffinatly grab the PCS some special weapons though, 2 G-Launchers or an autocannon. Every little helps.
Lascannons are a bit of a waste on Infantry Squads. I've used them before and all they do is waste Lasguns. Another Vendetta or investing in some HWS with Lascannons might be a better choice.
Lascannons on Russ seem a bit pointless to me. The Russ is a Troop killer and really should only look to blatting tanks in an emergency. If you really want a Decent tank killer then go for a Normal Russ with a lascannon and Pask. But for those points you might as well grab 2 Devil Dogs.
The Demolisher. I use these boys extensively. These guys are usually always on the move as they only have a 24" range on their main gun. For this reason i'd not bother with sponsons and just go for a hull H-Flamer incase anything gets to close.
Now, i'm glad i'm not alone. I like Ogryns too. I think they can be incredibly nasty if used right. They can dish out a hell of alot of Dakka and can then assault. They're a nasty counter attack unit and alot of fun. I'd like to see these boys in a Chimera though.
HQ: That makes sense, can drop the medic, and then put in more weapons on the PCS.
Troops: What do you suggest instead of lascannons? More autocannons, or just leave them without heavy weapons, so there can be a few squads that are more mobile.
Heavy: I don't use the lascannon on the basic Russ, just the Demoiisher. The heavy flamer on the Demolisher is an interesting idea though, will have to try it sometime.
Elite: I'll see if I can squeeze another Chimera in, nice to find others that use them too, lol.
Thanks for the advice.
TROOPS: Sorry i should have been more clear really. Autocannons are cheap and reliable weapons for taking down light vehicles and they go really well with grenade launchers. Missile launchers are 5pts more expensive, they still have the dual roll of killing tanks and infantry but have a better AP incase you're against marines. It's really up to you what you go with. Personally i try and keep my infantry killing infantry and leave things like tanks and transports up to HWS, tanks or sentinels. I just hate wasting lasguns on tanks unless i have to.
If you want mobile squads try and just go with veterans. Their access to more special weapons means they're idealy suited for the 'mobile' style of play.
HEAVY: Whoops, I kinda meant the demolisher here lol. Personally i'd keep the Hull weapon on a Leman Russ a H-bolter as that suits it's dakka dakka infantry killer role. Anything with a short range like the demolisher i'd whack on a h-flamer as it's going to be getting close to the enemy.
ELITES: hehe yeah. I was actually thinking of trying this out in my next game. Ogryn unit led by Yarrick. Unlike a priest his re-rolls to hit in combat just says "any unit he joins". So that should be fairly horiffic. 5 Ogryns, 21 attacks re-rolling Misses and at str6. It is about a 400pt unit though lol.
