Hi everyone so I've been playing 40k for about a year now as space marines, specifically salamanders.
I am trying to come up with a viable Vulkan army (original I know) but my list is about a few hundred points too fat. I'm trying to maximize Vulkans flamer, melta, TH rules so here is the list I came up with.
and I believe we aren't supposed to list point values but I'll put in the total at the end.
Vulkan He'stan attached to assault termies
Chaplain w/ Jump-pack attached to 5 man assault squad
Tac Squad w/ ML and Flamer
Tac Squad w/ ML and Meltagun
Rhino w/ smoke launcher
Assault Terminators w/ TH & SS
Dreadnought w/ Heavy flamer & Multimelta
5- man assault squad w/ power-weapon
Land Speeder w/ 2x Heavy Flamer
Devastator Squad w/ 2x ML & 2x Multimeltas
Land Raider Redeemer (termies and vulkan inside)
The basic strategy I use is to divide my devs into ML and MM squads and leave the ML's in the back while the MM ride up in the rhino to blow up tanks.
Same idea with the tac squads, ML's stay behind while flamer and Meltaguns ride with termies to unload and unleash their fire.
Land raider and termies is obviously to close with the enemy and assault with the flamestorm as support.
Assault squad keeps up with land raider and supports terminators assault.
and the land speeder and dreadnaught mops up any infantry or hard targets I may have missed.
The dred is on the short list to be cut becasue he never really comes into play and doesn't do much when I can use him.
The assault squad is hit and miss as well, sometimes they are invaluable others their saves jsut dont cut it.
Anyway, I would like any suggestions into a better way to trim down my force or make it more competitive.

I gonna give it to you straight, sorry in advance if you have to rearrange a lot of things after this:
Give each seargent powerfist and each squad a rhino, not just one
Give dreadnought a drop pod, lack of range = no fun
Give your landspeeder one Heavy Flamer & one multi-melta for dual role
Get rid of devastator squad since they don't suit your army = replace with more landspeeders or attack bikes for heavy support
Fine apart from devastators = wasted points
IMO, get rid of chaplain & assault squad since you already got a HQ
or keep them and bulk up squad size to 10 with 2 flamers and power fist seargent.

I agree with a lot of what Cyph3r said. Get your sergeants Rhinos/Razorbacks and definitely powerfists. I'd drop the Devastators since you have the makings of a decent mechanized list. If you keep the Assault squad definitely bulk them up to 10 models otherwise they'll probably get chewed up crossing the board.
Also, you have mixed range weapons on your Devastators which will make them less effective. If you combat squad them (assuming a full squad) then disregard this last comment.
With a He'Stan list I would definitely consider taking Witchhunter into the army. They are cheaper and have lots of options to add Flamer and Meltas
e.g. as Fast Attack choice a Dominion Squad with 4 Meltaguns in an Immolator
The good thing is, as SM player you can take Witchhunters freely as allies (afaik up to 1 HQ, 2 Troops, 1 Elite and 1 Fast Attack), you just can't have Heavy Support (so no Sister-"Devastator"-Squad with Multimeltas).
Yes I always combat squad my devs and tacs. Is the sergeant w/ PF just to give the squads that extra "oomph" in CC?
I'm gonna try a game with the devs and see how it works, if they epic fail I'll just drop them and beef up my ASM and throw in some more rhinos.

Tac. squad w/ ML and Flamer + Power fist
Tac Squad w/ ML and meltagun + Power fist
Term Assault w/ TH & SS
10 man assault squad w/ 2x flamers and power weapon
Land speeder w/ Multimelta and Heavy flamer
Land raider redeemer
Total: 1500 pts on the dot
I have a question though, if I divide my 2 tac squads into combat squads, could two of the new 5 man squads use the same rhino? If so I could use those points for another speeder or something.

Nope, 2 Combat Squads can't fit in the same transport. Only 1 unit (Excluding Independent Characters, they're special) can ride in a transport at a time.
