I'm just starting, have played about 10 games and bought a decent sized army and would like some tips on my 1500 point army list. My friends play orks and nids and necrons, so thats what my army is primarily built for, and thats where my playing experience comes from.
260 8 Sternguard Veterans, drop pod, 3 combi-melta, 2 combi-flamer
230 Venerable Dreadnought w/ heavy flamer, drop pod with deathwind
115 Vanilla Dreadnought w/ heavy flamer
215 10 Tac squad w/ flamer, lascannon, rhino
170 10 Tac squad w/ flamer, missile
164 9 Snipers: 8 rifles and a heavy bolter, camo cloaks
130 2 Land Speeders w/ heavy flamers, 1 heavy bolter, 1 multimelta
115 Vanilla vindicator
Modelwise, I also have another tac squad (3 total), 5 assault marines, a thunderfire, 10 black reach terminators, a dakka predator, Telion and Chronus, two Captains, and a techmarine+servitors (he didn't do very well when I tried him though)
Are land speeders worth building a squadron of? Is it a good tactic to just put two heavy flamers on one or two and suicide-deep-strike them to take out some gene stealers or nobz and try to rush in with dreads to lock them up before the speeders can be destroyed? I'm not sure how to play with them yet.. Also having trouble figuring out how best to use my tac marines, it seems like the rest of my army is doing all the lifting, since I'm playing orks and nids I'm afraid of assaulting anything, so my friends make fun of me for playing tau marines. Genestealers are scary!
I like drop pods. I like my predator but am trying out the vindicator instead for the time being. I havn't tried bikes or assault-anything because as I said, I'm playing against orks and nids and assaulting them is scary. I have thought of buying a land raider redeemer with assault termies and just driving right through all the nids and unloading in front of his command cluster, but that's 500~ points for a do or die tactic.. Should try it sometime though, my friends are certainly as terrified of terminators as I am of their nobs/genestealers
Thanks for reading
I can tell you that my thunderfire eats orks and nids all day long. It usually cant be taken out if you bolster defences in good cover as oks and nids usually die before they can get to it. On average my cannon inflicts 20-30 wounds (unsavable) against gaunt hordes in one round of shooting.
Yeah the thunderfire was built for killing orks and nids, it can deal with guard but their ranged weapons can take care of it without much trouble. If you dropped the ven dread down to a normal dread and lost the land speeders you could afford a thunderfire cannon and dakka preadtor. Those would help to destroy orks and nids from a range and even necrons would be failing saves, (and WB.
