Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey I'm new to the Warhammer 40k universe and I decided to play as Imperial Guard because I read a lot of the fluff as well as the newest codex. While reading that new codex a certain character caught my mind and I kinda wanted to build a guard armylist (maybe 500 points since I'm starting out) around this character and his tactics. That would be Commander Kubrik Chenkov. I know it's a bit odd but I think it would be awesome to see waves of guardsman being driven foward into the fray and crushing my enemies (sisters, space Marines, etc.) However, I'm a bit overwhelmed by the enourmity of options as well as my inexperience. so I was wondering if you had any suggestions. My only guidlines are lots of infantry, Chenkov, and if it was possible, conscripts( i want to use Chenkov's send in the next wave so bad). I plan on having a russ for support but one or two would be about it. would also like to use mortars. But Chenkov an infantry are the crucial ones. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
The problem with Conscripts is they run. A lot. Even though Chenkov makes them Stubborn, a Stubborn Ld 5 isn't amazing. Luckily there's an answer for this: a Lord Commissar. Put him in another squad close to the Conscripts, now they're Ld 10! If Chenkov is around, that's Stubborn Ld10, now they're better than Space Marines!
A list with Chenkov isn't exactly competitive, since 20 Conscripts than costs 155 points. Your best bet would be to use one big unit or two small units as A. shields for cover and B. a giant wall to catch assaults. A list of 1000 or 1500 would see him being far more useful, for a smaller game I'd leave him in the case.
Thanks for the advice. So okay, how about a small infantry army. I'll put up a list in a little while that I think might be good. I would like to have an Infantry platoon, maybe 3 squads, a HW team and maybe a medusa, to start out. would that be good?two squads with auto/grenade launcher and a third with plasma and a laser cannon my heavy weapons team with mortars for a suppressive/ anti-horde weapon and the medusa with bastion shells to spice it up a notch. What do you suggest?
That's actually similar to the list I've built, on a smaller scale. Autocannons/Grenades and Lascannons/Plasma mesh well I feel, and Lascannon/Plasma can do awesome things with Bring it Down.
I might try to make the lis legal in 500 points, ie 1 HQ 2 Troops. It's a squeeze, although if your opponent is fine save it for 750 or 1000.
okay, thanks. I don't mean to be so naive but I'm new so here goes nothing. I have built a squad of cadians but I've always wanted Valhallans however I'm kinda leary about the metal models because I've never actually built any before plus I know absolutely nothing about how to paint them or even assemble them. So if you've had experience with metal models I would greatly appreciate any tips you have. Also just a little tidbit, I'm kinda big on fluff armies, my favorite being Valhallan, I have the older codex that has the regimental doctrines and I was wondering if they are allowed anymore or are even useful. Because I was kinda excited about a Valhallan army wielding flamers and mortars supported by priests. However, they came out with the new codex and frankly it leaves a lot of unanswered questions.
Fluff is always a lot of fun and makes for very unique armies. Don't know how much I can say for an infantry heavy list or anything involving special characters as my army has Mech/Inquisition fluff behind it.
Doctrines are no longer in the new codex, but if you can convince your friends to let you modify them and use them for 5th edition that'd work. Probably wouldn't be accepted in any gaming leagues at all, though.
okay so here is an army list I just came up with:
Platoon Command- 110pts
2 flamers- 10pts
heavy flamer- 20 pts
Chenkov- 50 pts
Leman Russ -150
I know chenkov and the heavy flamer are a little extravagent but I figure it's worth it because I plan to use my platoon command squad as my counter-attack unit . Chenkov's toughness and the mass of template weapons will be useful because if they aren't destroyed in a wave of burning promethium Chenkov's power weapon will finish them. Also if the unit that was assaulted fled, then Chenkov's Get Back In The Fight order will come in handy. However, I have fifteen points left and I would like some ideas on what to do with them. Plus the input on the army list would be useful
Unfortunately that list isn't legal by the codex- you have only filled one troop slot and haven't got an HQ. Unfortunately the only way of doing this is to drop the Russ and take a veterans squad and company command squad instead. You xcan still get some special weapons in there though, or even a chimera.

okay cool, Thanxs. What load out do you think I should use for my command squad? I'll finalize the list once I get your suggestion, and thanx for the tips, really, because I would be so lost right now. Oh, and what about a plasma gun for the 3rd squad instead of a grenade launcher. That would give it some major punch against power armor and light vehicles
oh,okay. Thanx also. What if I got rid of the third squad and instituted a company command squad. I would like to keep the Russ so I can learn some armor tactics. If that will work what do you suggest for my CC's set up?
