I am new to space marines and honestly I am not sure how to play them. I played eldar a long time ago so honestly I do not understand how to play units that can acutally take a hit. I have a bunch of space marine pieces and I was hoping someone could help me piece together an army with what I have. I am going to paint them as salamanders as I love their combat style. Someone who will protect the cities when other marines see it as a waste of time seem like heroes to me.
Well anyways here is what I have.
2X space marine Rhino's
2X Space Marine Razorback's with Heavy bolters
1X Preditor Destructor (Autocannon Heavy bolters)
1x Preditor Annihilator (Laz cannons all around)
30 Space marines (3 with Rocket Launcher, 3 with Flamers. Can Substitue weapons)
16 Terminators with Storm Bolters and Power fists.
3x Dreadnaughts with Heavy Flamers and Stormbolter/Power weapon. (Can/Will substitue weapons)
1x Chaplin character with the mace
3x officers with power sword
I do not have a squad of bikers but I think 3 bikers, 1 attack bike, and a character on a bike will be my next purchase. What do you all think?
Hi, you didn't really specify how many points, but we'll work with what you've got and see what comes up. If you're playing Salamanders you should consider getting Vulkan He'stan, as he makes your Flamers and Melta's twin linked. But we'll do without him for now. So we're gonna need beefy characters with alot of firepower:
2 Dreadnoughts-You will probably need Drop Pod's for these later but for now stick them with Assault Cannon's and DCCW w/Heavy Flamer. This will give you a combination of range assaults that can pierce tanks/armour and Flamers that can slaughter hordes.
6 Terminators- Attach a Cyclone Missle Launcher to a Terminator you can get the bitz on e-bay or off a good friend. If you plan to play more of these consider getting them a Land Raider Redeemer as this will get them around the battlefield unharmed plus it's themey.
Whirlwind-You'll need this against hordes or light armour infantry.
Predator-With Autocannon and Heavy Bolters hunts Infantry and other small tanks as well, although a 2nd Whirlwind might be better.
Captain-Slap a Relic Blade on him (just paint his sword fancy and call it one) and give him Hellfire Rounds to go with the Salamander theme. Again if you can replace him with Vulkan more power to you!
3 Tactical Squads- Keep them as is with Flamers and Missle Launchers this the best way to learn to use them. Later on of course depending on what armies you're playing against you can switch out the weapons, Melta's for tanks, Plasma for armoured troops etc. 2 of these squads will go in Rhino's give those Sgt's Powerfists.
2 Rhino- This is to get your guys into the heat of battle as soon as possible. Fill them up and go 12 inches
1 Razorback-This one is for a combat squad plus your HQ to make sure he gets in on the action as well. Leave the other half of the combat squad protecting an objective or set them high up so your Missle Launcher can pick off tanks!
This makes for an even 1500 pt. list!!! Hope this helped!!!
Thanks, that is awesome. I should have said 1000 points but 1500 is going to be my main army. I do like Salamanders and can't wait to start painting them. I do like the idea of the twin linked weapons. If I was going to drop the termies at 1500 points what would you replace them with?
For 1500 I was wondering if 4 tac squads, 2 in rhino's 2 in razorbacks plowing todwards the enemy for close combat would be a good theme for them.

Yeah Terminators are hard to replace their 2+ Save is awesome, but if you need to replace them at 1500 try an Assault Squad Sgt with Powerfist and 2 guys with Flamers. This will give you a Fast Attack Choice to make your army a little more balanced. If you don't have access to them meanwhile I'd go with that next purchase you're thinking of. Bikes with Melta's/Multi Melta's are scary!
Today I am buying 3x Bikers and an attack bike to finish this off. I like the idea and for 170 points I can make a mean anti-tank squad. I am also debating if I should get 2x droppods for the dreads. I bet they are nasty anti-tank with the multimelta in the pods.
Yeah the Dreads really do benefit from the Drop Pods and Multi-Melta's can bust a tank but it's really hit or miss since you only get one shot. This is where Vulkan will come in handy, but you should still stick to buying those Bikes as they get more shots have more speed so they can get around the board to keep busting tanks.
So the Pods are a good investment for the Dreads in the long run this will ensure they can get in position without getting busted. Good Luck!
