I am putting together a 500 pt IG list using standard Codex for the first time and need some advice as I am a total newby to IG. I will be playing against mostly Orks, Eldar, and some SM armies. Here's what I have so far (based off a list I found on net):
-Boltgun for CC
-Power Weapon for CC
-LR Battle Tank
Totals 512pts. Don't know where shave the 12pts. I am aware that my second TC has the Heavy Weapon included in an assault type configuration with the two meltas. So maybe I do away with the autocannon??? Also, will there be a need for Plasmas? Let me know what you guys think.
Start with putting a boltpistol on the CC instead of a boltgun (+1A and you can shoot and charge)
Since your army will be advancing with the tank i'm not sure heavy weapons are a good choice, removing them will get you alot of points to spend.
Plasma will take out any terminators (devastating since the terms will be in a squad of 5 and is probably 75% of their army) but if you dont face term then the extra strength is almost useless. I perfer to bring grenade Launchers instead, they still have high S and AP3 for MEQs. Grenade Launchers do go better with a "dirty jungle fighter" style.
the LR will be good and reliable, but if your opponent gets lucky turn 1 and knocks it out or stuns it, you could lose a good part of your army.
I would bring 2 hellhounds (fits your theme) they are lighter armored (at this size game that wont be much of a problem) but having 2 of them because they are cheaper would give your army more survivability.
If you stick with LR then maybe a LR demolisher would perform better?
I have not used Marbo yet but a sentinel is almost the same price, and would be a good addition to the list
"Thank him who puts me loath to this revenge on you who wrong me not for him who wrongd"
Ok, so could you show me what your revised list might look like? Thank you for the help!
Try not to do all things at once with a unit. You've got combat and shooty here, i'd pick one and do it well rather than do everything but not very well.
Marbo is nasty in this sized points game.
How about making one Squad your 'objective taker' unit and giving that all the assault weapons and camo cloaks to keep them alive? Then make the second unit your home objective holding with the long range guns? 3 Units would be better to behonest with you. 20 Guardsmen just die to quickley
Almost a 3rd of your army in one model. Do you really want him? Can he wait untill you reach 750pts?
I only have a catachan battleforce box set, 1 Russ, Marbo, and a mortar team blister right now. Trying to make the best of it until I can get more units. Can you suggest how you would run this list? (i.e. How to tweak my HQ and troop selections)
Hmmmm ok so what special weapons do you have available to you? I'm not familiar with the Battle Force.

Alright, here's a comprehensive list of everything available:
2 Catachan 10 man squads
1 Company Command Squad
1 Leman Russ Battle Tank
3 Heavy Weapons Teams
(can all be the same or any arrangement of Lascannon, Heavy Bolter, Autocannon, Missle Launcher)
1 Mortar Team Blister
Here are my weapons available:
2 Grenade Launchers, 4 Flamers, 2 Plasmaguns, 2 Plasma pistols, 3 Meltas, 2 Powerfists, many boltguns, many bolt pistols, 1 Sniper Rifle, 5 chain swords, 1 power sword, 1 heavy flamer, 1 standard bearer, many close combat weapons, lasguns, laspistols.
Also, Medipack and Vox Caster for HQ. Sorry for all the text. Hope this works.
Can't forget Marbo and Straken.
Ah so you've got quite a good selection then!
CCS: Lascannon = 70pts
Cheap and reliable. With Orders like Bring it Down! a twinlinked Lascannon can kill light transports fairly easily or you can throw the order the Vets way instead.
Marbo = XXpts
Nasty in this sized points games and can turn the tide of the battle if his Democharge hits.
VETS: 2 Plasma guns, Autocannon = 110pts
This squad can either sit back and take down heavy infantry or with the BiD order you can take down transports and Monstrous creatures. Plus if anything scary comes near your lines you can leap forward and finish off the survivors with Rapid firing Plasma.
VETS: 2 G-Launchers, Missile Launcher = 95pts
A cheap dependable unit to camp on your objective. Would be good to put Camo cloaks on these guys but you don't have the points
RUSS: Hull H-Bolter = 150pts
It does what it does.
You've got 10pts left, You could upgrade the Autocannon on the 1st Vet squad to a Lascannon which would suit the Plasma's AP2 nicely, you could swap the 2 G-Launchers in the 2nd Vet squad to Melta guns. Or you could drop the Missile Launcher to an Autocannon and grab a Demolisher rather than a Russ.
I'd advise against putting Melta guns on foot Infantry. Walking towards tanks will only get you run over and killed. They'll need a Transport. Save them for when you branch out to 1000pts and grab a Vet squad with a Chiemera.
Hope thats some food for thought anyway.
Nice job bro, thanks for the advice! I will give it a run and see what happens. Take care.
No worries. Try a few things and see what works for you. When you hit 1000pts make another list and put that up as well.
PS: When you get some more models i'd suggest grabbing a cheap platoon with Autocannons/M-Launchers and Grenade Launchers to hold your home objective. Then Whack all or most of your vets in chimeras to give you a nasty mobile force to go kill big things and grab some objectives.
