This is my first list with the new guard dex, I will be using the forgeworld elysian models so I wanted a list that fits with their background and decided on an air cav list. The army is totally airbourne as I decided that I dont want to do things by halves if I'm spending a lot of money on expensive models. Still, I dont want the army to be totally inefective so I would appreciate any feedback that can be given.
Company Command Squad
I realise that this probably isn't the most effective build but with the forgeworld kit, my choice is more limited (only 1 special weapon which is a plasmagun)
Multi rocket pods
Vulture Gunship (Imperial Armour 1)
4x multi rocket pods
The vulture will be using the rules from the IA1 update found on the forgeworld website
The main problem I can see with this list is that is low on troops, thoughts anyone?
Not much to say, except that you should have a substitute ready for your vulture in case the person you will be playing is a stickler to GW codex-listed models only...or if you play them in any campaigns or tournaments.
Also, I'd get rid of the medic and carapace on your HQ. That and your vulture can get you a nice demolisher w/plasma sponsoons should you not be able to use your vulture.
With J2O on this one, Ditch the Medic. It's alot of points and is only really worth it if your CCs is entering some combats - which yours isn;t designed too. You could grab 2 more plasma Guns with that. Either that or give this squad 4 Melta guns to be your Big tank killer or 4 Plasma Guns to be the MC killer of Doom. I'm sure FW do weapon packs for the elysians
Good. 2 Is pretty risky. If you're playing ther "capture the flag" mission then you've only got 1 scoring unit to hold your own and one to capture the enemies........loose one and you'll have to resort to contesting which leads to many many Draws.
Maybe go with Meltas for these guys if you give your CCS Plasma Guns.
Ditch the Vox Network. You could do with the Points in other places.
Fine. Maybe grab H-Bolters for the Valk for some Extra Dakka.
I'd Consider ditching this guy to get the points for another Valk with some Vets. 2 Scoring units is just too low.
I'd seriously consider dropping all the Carapace armour on these guys. You just don;t have the points spare. Your transports are so expensive they're eating all your points so you need every point you can get for troops. It's fluffy but it's killing you.
Ditching the Vox Network, dropping the Medic and the Plasma Guns on the Vets to Melta guns and the Vulture gives you 230pts. Which is another Valk carrying 10 guys with Melta guns.
If you dropped all the Carapace on the other Squads you'd have another 80pts. Which is enough to kit out your CCS with 3 more Plasma Guns (4 total)
Kinda what i mean is this:
CCS: 4 Plasma Guns - 110pts
VETS 1: 3x Melta Guns - 100pts
VETS 2: 3x Melta Guns - 100pts
VETS 3: 3x Melta Guns - 100pts
2x Valks with H-Bolter Gunners - 280pts
Vendetta - 130pts
Vendetta - 130pts
I work that out as 950pts so you've got enough to upgrade all those Melta Guns to Plasma Guns if you want too. Or you could loose a Plasma gun and take Marbo. Up to you.
Maybe you could kit one of your Squads out with some long range dakka and a heavy weapon for dropping on an objective and holding that. 2 Plasma Guns and an Autocannon/M-Launcher is pretty reliable.
I saw a guy at my gaming store here in Northern California lose miserably with an Air Cav army. Admittedly, I am not trying to discourage you or be "a hater" as the kids say these days, and I was actually thinking of doing something similar myself (former Screaming Eagle in my real life), but this experience actually made me re-think it. Most of his squads were killed off as they were deploying, and most of thier transports went with them. This left the remainder of his army shocked and confused, much to the delight of Chaos Space Marines who were licking thier chops. I have always been suspicious of the Guard's new flying transport, and now I am ready to state I will never have one in my army. But best of luck to you, and make sure to check out some tactica forums.
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
Thanks for the advice, the lack of troops was something I was concerned about myself, so I think I will drop the vulture in 1000pts and stick in another vet squad in valk and keep the vulture for larger games. This should also solve any problems with opponents not wanting to play against FW rules.
I am also going to replace the plasmaguns on 2 of the 3 vet squads with meltas as suggested, this saves me enough points to get an astropath for my command squad, who will be dropping the useless equipment in favour of more special weapons.
I think this list is more competative now whilest sticking to the elysian theme which is exactly what i was after so thank you again to everyone who gave advice.
Now i just have to go and sell my kidneys to buy the models
apply to work at gws part time and get half price on all gws goodies lol, the elysian drop troop troopers hey? how about dropping in a commissar lord and trying to fit in the points for another vet squad? that would make it even ore fluffy and probably less competitive, but it could be more fun . or even a elysian marbo would be very good .
cool, are you volunteering?I always find it's better to sell someone elses. You can do it more than once plus you don't have all the medical bills afterwards.
Also, the idea of an elysian marbo is very tempting, maybe in 1500pts, as for the commisar, he's on the cards at some point, i may use the gaunt model as he is a bit smaller and thinner than the other GW sculpts and would fit better with the elysian models.
Marbo is pretty useful and i'd had fun with him in the games i've used him in. He's a dodgy one in KP games and he pretty much dies after he's lobbed that Democharge but he usually always makes his points back.
yep, i agree with borak on the marbo part, but seriously: *points a figner at borak
bad dog! bad dog! now go and stick your body right udner that machine. yes right there ^^.
or you can jsut find a leprechaun ^^ and there's your pot a gold .
