    First IG army list

Yarrick (will be with Vet Squad one) 185

    Guardsman Marbo 65

    Vet Squad 1 175
Sgt w/ Power Weapon and Plasma Gun
Chimera hvy flamer for hvy bolter camo netting Pintle mounted SB

    Vet Squad 2 180
    3 Melta Guns
Chimera hvy flamer for hvy bolter camo netting Pintle mounted SB

    2 Scout Sentinels 80
    2 Auto Cannon

    Mantacore 160

    Deathstrike 160

The idea for this is to use the Deathstrike(as I think it sounds cool) and still be a hard match to win. Vet 1 is my melee squad, 2 my tank hunters. The scouts will take out swarms and Marbo will take out big points. Besides that, I hoped it would be well rounded, please give any help you can, as this is my first try at this(and first army in the game). Thanks in advance for your help.

i am guessing this is a total of 1000 points? it would help to put down the total points cost that your aiming for and you seem to have fallen for the beginner's trap or big points mean big wins. It's nothing to be ashamed of, even expereinced players in this forum sometimes get distracted by manticores, deathstrikes etc. and marbo, especially marbo and russes ^^. or just the entire codex . lol

Yarrick (will be with Vet Squad one) 185

ok, yarrick is a big target. you enemy will shoot them down first, because he is the biggest threat at the moment. i would tkae off yarrick and get a command squad with a chimera and plasma guns to provide anti-Monstrous Creature and anti-terminator equivilant firepower. they are BS 4 so they will hit on 3s and most of the time wound on 2s. which is nice and better when they have second lives provided by a transports as well as extra long legs ^^. In any list it's very important to always have your command squads or commanders moving at all times to supoort there army, where it is most needed.

    Guardsman Marbo 65

very good choice, make sure you don't isolate him fron the army and deepstrike him close to cover or somewhere where he can survive and still cause mayhem.

    Vet Squad 1 175
Sgt w/ Power Weapon and Plasma Gun
Chimera hvy flamer for hvy bolter camo netting Pintle mounted SB

you fon't need to power weapon as close combat for the guard is a no no and i would give your veteran the role of anti-tank as they are much less expensive than tanks and work very well for anti-tank better than anti-mounstrous creature firepower. I would also ignore the camo netting for the chimeras as the smoke launchers that come with them do quite nicely. i would also go for this weapon variant if your moving closer towards the enemy. heavy flamer and multi-laser. because one ignores cover and the other has a higher strenght weapon to threaten vehicles and it has the same amount of shots as a heavy bolter.

    Vet Squad 2 180
    3 Melta Guns
Chimera hvy flamer for hvy bolter camo netting Pintle mounted SB

    same advice as above.

    2 Scout Sentinels 80
    2 Auto Cannon

nice, i would split them up, what is their purpose? anti-tank rear armour killing?

    Mantacore 160

ok the manticore is not a bad choice and there are still many debates as to whether it is good enough for it's points as 2x griffons are more reliable and if your relying on the manticore for your anti-tank and anti-tank then your wasting alot of points. becase a manticore fills both of those roles and costs alot more. where as melta veterans have one significant advantage over the manticore or two. they are troops and they survive much more easily than a manticore.

Imagine if someone used the exact same list against you. you would concentrate your sentinels for outflanking and destroy the manticore from behind. where as if you had say two griffons. then you would find it hard to destroy two tanks that have the same armour values of a manticore.

    Deathstrike 160

ok i can understand why you want it, but it is very unreliable and it may shoot too late and you might never get to use it because it is a top priority target and expect it to die early in the game. i would take it for games a tiny bit larger, but you can still use it if you want for fun games. but for competitive games i would go for griffons for your anti-horde. not russes well maybe one russ and 2 griffons. and rely on plasma and melta weapons to do the rest.

i hoped i helped you without making your head spin with such a long response. if you would like me to break it down to be simpler to read then i would be happy to do it. especially for someone new to the hobby.

however, my strongest advice is to look at lists whoes total points list is the same as yours and look at the comments that they have recieved.

if you want a themed list, then let us know and i am sure other members of the forum will try their best to help out.

    thanks

Ok, I guess I was a little vauge, mind you, I don't know if it applies to the game as well(as I have yet to play a game and kinda want to have a solid start before I by my pieces) but I am going for what I know from being in the millitary, and using those for my ideas, as they don't work, I have reworked my list using your ideas. And yes, this was for 1000 points

    CC 175
    4 Plasma
    CC with Plasma
    Chimera ML/Hvy Flamer

    Guardsman Marbo 65

    2 Vet Squad 150 each
    3 meltas Chimera w/ ml/HF

    Scout Sentnal 40
    Autocannon

    Scout Sentnal 40
    Auto Cannon

    Scout Sentnal 40
    Auto Cannon

    2 Griffion 75 each

    1 Leman Russ 190
Heavy Bolter and Plasma Cannon spisons

    Ok, Plan

CC takes out big armored guys
    Troups Take out Tanks
    Scouts take out Troups
    Griffion Takes out Troups
    Russ takes out heavy armor
    Marbo takes out VIP's

Sounds reasonable to me, if anyone has any advise let me know, would like to buy my peases this weekend and get to painting.

Yeah, using real world military knowledge on 40k is a total waste of time At least I hope our military isn't going up against giant space bugs or blood daemons.

2nd list looks a lot better, though you are light on Troops. A platoon would help boost your numbers and give you more firepower. 2 infantry squads and a PCS with autocannons will run you 160 points, same as your 3 Sentinels and Russ plasma sponsons.

A demolisher might serve you better here, S10 AP2 is worlds better than the battle cannon.

Military knowledge does carry over a little bit when it comes to IG, but don't rely on it.

    CC 175
    4 Plasma
    CC with Plasma
    Chimera ML/Hvy Flamer
Pricey units, but very deadly. I'd drop the plasma pistol, once again it is pricey and you don't want your commander potentially blowing himself up.

    Guardsman Marbo 65
Hit or miss unit, but he is a lot of fun

    2 Vet Squad 150 each
    3 meltas Chimera w/ ml/HF
Good good. I would like to see at least one more troop choice. Only taking two even at 1000 points is risky. Like ==He== said, a dirt cheap platoon would be nice.

    Scout Sentnal 40
    Autocannon

    Scout Sentnal 40
    Auto Cannon

    Scout Sentnal 40
    Auto Cannon
If you need to free up points you can drop one of these.

    2 Griffion 75 each
Haven't used these guys at all, but they are cheap and can deal with hordes very well. Keep these guys out of line-of-sight at all times.

    1 Leman Russ 190
Heavy Bolter and Plasma Cannon spisons
A lot of people like this guy. I don't all that much, to me it mixes roles up too much for my tastes. Yes it is 40 points cheap than the Executioner plasma-death tank, but I prefer vehicles having very dedicated roles.

    I second the demolisher

CC takes out big armored guys
Yup, use these guys to hunt terminators, MCs, and anything else with a ridiculous armor save. Don't be surprised if they end up killing themselves a bunch, though.

    Troups Take out Tanks
    Yup

    Scouts take out Troups
Can work, but there are more important tasks first. Use them to pop transports, outflank them to hit tanks in the side and rear armor, lay wounds on MCs. After that go nuts on the troops.

    Griffion Takes out Troups
    Yup

    Russ takes out heavy armor
Eh, there are better units for this role. the LRBT can maul marines, yes, but anything with a better armor save or AV 13/14 would benefit from a different tank.

    Marbo takes out VIP's
He's better suited to wiping out clustered groups of MEQs. Find something bunched up and unload that democharge as soon as he shows up. He won't live long enough to do anything else.

Sounds reasonable to me, if anyone has any advise let me know, would like to buy my peases this weekend and get to painting.
Good luck, dude. Welcome to 40k and the guard.

do you guys in the army really use such beefed up techy leaders? just wandering because you said you was thinking from military experience.
yea i would go with demolisher over the russ, because your griffons have got your anti-horde sorted, but you still lack anti-terminator firepower. and the chimeras with the veteran squads and melta guns cost 155 points not 150.
that's all i can say for now, more will come later when i am have more time.
    thanks

Maybe not supped up techy leaders, but we do have leaders so insperational and forceful, they do seem almost god like sometimes.

    I'd go with ==HIS== Advice.

Change the Leman Russ for a Demolisher, ditch the Sentinels and use the points to grab a Small 25 Man platoon. Arm all the Squads with Autocannon/Grenage Launcher. It's a decent combination that can take down infantry and take down light tanks that the melta Vets would otherwise be wasted on.

    Maybe this?

    CCS - 2x Plasma Guns, Chimera - 135pts

    Marbo - XXpts

    VETS - 3x Melta Guns, Chimera - 155pts
    VETS - 3x Melta Guns, Chimera - 155pts

    PCS - Autocannon - 40pts
    INF - Autocannon - 60pts
    INF - Autocannon - 60pts

    Demolisher, Hull H-Flamer - 165pts
    Demolisher, Hull H-Flamer - 165pts

I'd run something like that. You could always ditch a Demolisher for 2 Griffons and use the remaining points to by the infantry G-Launchers.

that's about as competitive you can get, but i prefer i much more sneaky approach. as they save with guard. strike only when you are ready to obliterate the enemy completely without pause nor mercy and leave nothing to work against you.
