got a 1k point list that I'm bringing to a tourney this weekend. Any thoughts or advice?
-might of the ancients
10 man Tach Squad 230
-sgt w/ powerfist+bolter
10 man Tach Squad 230
-sgt w/ powersword+pistol
Ironclad Dreadnought 180
Vulkan goes with the Combat squad in the razorback while the librarian goes in the drop pod. Speeder goes vehicle hunting and sets things on fire if no vehicles are around. (same w/ ironclad but he doubles as a tarpit) can't really figure out which powers to take w/ the lib... I really am having a hard time picking a shooting attack, Smite vs Avenger... I have so many templates, but smite just appeals to me slightly more.
Any and all advise would be greatly appriciated...
I'd say that's a pretty solid list. It covers most bases: maneuverable, plenty anti-armour and anti-infantry firepower.
The only thing I'd be tempted to change is take a regular Multimelta Dreadnought instead of the Ironclad and think about taking an Attack Bike with a Heavy Bolter which could give a bit more fire support to your Tactical Squads.
As it is, I think you've got a list that should perform well. Let us know how you get on at the Tournament!
i absolutely second this advice, if you want to stick witgh this list.
Having just had a though about it there are a couple of other changes i would make but these would pretty much change your list dynamic so feel free to ignore them, also i dont have a copy of the codex with me so the points might be out but here goes;
i would swap out the librarian and the land speeder and make the ironclad a regular MM/Hf dreadnought, with the points saved from this you should be able to get the following;
just an idea, let us know what you go for and how it turns out.
- a command squad with 2x flamers and 2x meltas (or any combination there of)
- a razor back for the above squad
- a locator beacon for one of the drop pods (i would suggest the tactical to get the dreadnought in on target)
well, you need a captain to field a command squad
I agree that the 100 points is a tad much for the lib, but I find that the Smite/Might combo adds the punch I need WHERE I need it for the tact squad in the pod.
Other option would be a Chappy or Captain in the pod with the boys, or even a Grey Knight Brother Captain with Holocaust and something else..
I just want the Tact squad that drops in to have some staying power, as they are my, "HA, now I have your objective turn 4" unit.
I like the 2 bikes instead idea.. but its in 2 days, and I'm not spending mony to buy bikes (attack bikes are just too much money) and I'd rather buy a speeder (since I deep strike them from time to time..) 2 Bikes with Meltas seems a tad over the top since i have so much anti-tank to begin with (for a 1k game anyways) but what would be a good option for the 100 points? I currently have in my box (unused) an AC/HF Dread, Full Grey Knight Squad, 5 man Terminators (TH/SS), 5 Grey Knight Terminators, an other Tact Squad, a Scout squad (with snipers+missile) and that's about it... I could replace the Librarian for 5 Scouts with Snipers, Missile and Cloaks for the same price... but I have NEVER had much luck with snipers... they're just way to unreliable w/o Telion. 5 scouts is usually 1-2 sniper hits, and usually 1 savable wound... any thoughts?
Went with the list in the first post this is how it went;
My first game was against a kid who had a decent understanding of the rules, but wasn't terribly honest about how he was going out it. Constantly trying to catch an old dog with a new trick... didn't work too well! Once he decided that he couldn't cheat his way through the game, he get all huffy and distracted. I'd cause wounds and he's pout over it for a minute or 2 before making any saves and move his models in MY assault phase trying to avoid a combat he didn't want, picking up dice for fallback distances, telling me his units had meltabombs when they didnt... was a bit of a joke thinking he'd get away with it.. and even more-so if he enjoys playing like that... ANYWAYS... The game was Pitched/Seize Ground as I said I took the above mentioned list and he took:
Chappy w/ jump pack
10 Man Tact w/ Lascannon/Melta
10 Man Tact w/ Missile/Melta
10 Man Scout (snipers+heavybolter w/ Telion)
10 Assault Marines, sgt w/ power weap and plasma pistol
I didn't get to go first in ANY of my games, always got 2nd. This person fielded the Chap in the Assault Marines and put em right on the front line, stuck his scouts in a building and the las-squad in a bush with an objective. and the Vindicator right in the middile.
I stuck down a 5 man tact (w/ plasmacannon) and a Razorback w/ Vulkan and 5 Marines. First poor bastard to take it off the chin was my Plasmacannon guy... I'm going to name him Lettuce b/c he did F*CK ALL ALL TOURNEY! ...anyways.. First blood was Lettuce, Telion saw to that while the misile tact squad ran and so did the jump marines, as for my turn, robot landed into the assault marine's faces and Vulkan drove up to meet the tact squad... Turn 2 he countered the Vulkan combat squad with the Assault squad... Vulkan made quick work of their chappy, but he directed 36 attacks with re-rolls to him!! he didn't make it... the rest of the squad stuck around a bit. for my turn 2, I attacked into the assault squad with the dread and squshed a few marines, and they fled after killing the rest of my tact squad.the speeder dropped in also turn 2 while the 2nd pod stayed in reserves. The speeder immo'd the vindicator, which was at this point, pointing at nothing, and it remained there for the game. Turn 3, he started to get pouty when I called him on a little thing known as "failure to rally" I consolidated my dread within 6" of his assault marines, and they ran off the table. so he ran with all his might with the tact to get away from the dread but it was too late... the snipers glanced the speeder to nothing but an immobile heavy flamer platform that set the immo'd vindi on fire for the rest of the game, doing nothing... Turn 4 the Marines met their maker (via Dread punches) and the scouts made a break for the objective, while my pod dropped in with the 10 man tact and librarian, killed 9 of his 10 man squad just from shooting... (was like 9 flamer wounds and like 7 or so bolter wounds with a couple of smites in there) his sgt ran and was later picked off by the librarian who ran to his deployment zone for the minor objective. (which was to have a unit 6" from their table edge) went to turn 6 and the dread killed all but telion in the scout squad who were both sitting on the objective.
Was a victorious slaughter for me since i had 1 Objective and he held none, and I had the secondary objective which was to be on his board edge. Major win
My 2nd game was another marines list against a friend of mine (Jamie) that I've met from time to time (he was an interviewee in a nerd documentary I shot a while back.. oddly the doc was what got me into 40k!), but his list was a bit more troopy... He had
Epistolary - w/ terminator armour+stormshield
-gate of infinity
10 man tact - las/melta
5 man scout - missile, cloaks, telion
8 Sternguard vets - 3 combimeltas
10 Man Devosquad - 4 missile launchers
This was one of the the CLOSEST games I've ever had! Whole game was neck and neck. Went to turn 7 and went down to the WIRE.
Again, I lose 1st turn and he deploys everything on the board. FIRST THING THAT HAPPENEDS, Lettuce takes a telion round off the chin AGAIN! ugh at least the 4 remaining from the unit are alive and well for the game. then I start to advance... this time I put Vulkan AND the Librarian in the drop pod, b/c it was Spearhead/Anniliation, with a minor objective to kill their most expensive troop choice. Turn 1 for drop assault, I choose 10 man tact w/ Vulkan and Libby to get into the fray turn 1... bold move but it pays off and they rip through the combat squads and the devo squad before the librarian/sternguards have a chance to react. Eventually, his libby killed mine and eventually vulkan fel to a combimelta. but his entire army was reduced to 4 sternguard and a librarian who I sent running... the lib broke off and teleported to my marines, where I killed him and then he got a lucky combiemlta shot to kill my dread turn 5...
Kill points ended up being 5-5, but all he had left on the board was 1 Sternguard vet! who was shot at by my 2 drop pods and heavy bolter on the razorback for 2 full shooting phases... so thre game ended up tieing for major objective... but I killed his most expensive troop choice, and my Razorback troop choice was 5 points more expensive than my drop pod choice, so I denied him that... mionr win for me!
3rd game, was against my buddy Alex... who; unfortunatly for him as been my punching bag coming up to this tourney... so I know all his tricks and all his faults, as he does mine, but he plays NECRONS, so its mostly based on luck imo...
Dawn of War, Capture and Control... My Favorite senario and his LEAST fav (he hates it w/ a passion!) Lettuce was planted on my objective in my far corner for the entire game and was out of range for the ENTIRE GAME... way to go lettuce (no Telion at least!)
Lord w/ Orb+Gaze
Usually a tough army to beat, but I had so much fast moving assault that I didn't even care, plus in most of our games online, he ends up getting a good beating anyways.
Turn 1 his destroyers and monolith can't see because of the darkness of turn 1, and therefore do nothing at all... The razorback has a road, so it flew up as fast as it could to the 20 warriors and popped smoke, where as the speeder went flat out into difficult terrain and rolled a 1, crashed and burned... great start speeder!! >
I did the same drop pod config as my first game. Lib in Pod, Vulk and razorback
By turn 2, I was in combat with the lordless squad picking them off with the lib and sgt power weaps, getting 3-6 wounds each round on combat...
Vulkan got out of his Razorback and swept the lord squad on turn 3 and I phased him out.
I was going to write up all his actions... His turn 1 was too dark to see, my turn 1 I killed all but 1 destroyer with smite and bolter fire, he got like 4 wounds from an entire warrior squad firing and failed to land a pie plate from the Monolith both times it shot the Rhino... (it actually killed 2 of his Necrons in his turn 3 shooting phase... he was boned, done, finished, phaszszszed.... Major win for me (that was the championship round)
Alex got 3rd place overall, and I took home first place! My first tourney ever and I got first place.
I got a trophy (or promise of one in the near future) and $30 store credit (I also got 2nd place General which was no prize but good recognition) So I guess I did good and I wasn't too much of a dick about it... cept when playing Alex, I kept laughing at him in the "Deck the Halls" melody... he wasn't impressed... but we're still friends... I think...(he taught me everything I know about 40k, and I stole the tournament from him, heh). Well I think I earned it, had to climb over marines to get to him.
Overall, was a good day. Came out on top and made a bit of coin to spend on my Fastasy Army. Thanks for reading... cheers
