I'm entering into a last minute tornament in 3 days time. Now I have 3 personally tailored SM armies from 1500-5000 points.
Apocalypse (2 titans, Thunderhawk) This is all out so I wont go into detail.(5000 points)
General (I can take most of this (included in list below)) (2500points)
Small Size (Every unit in this I can take, just not all of it) (1500 points)
In the tornament I can take:
As many troops as I want
1 Fast Attack
1 Heavy Support
All of my armies focus around large amounts of heavy support (8 Squads of Devastators ect. ect.)
This army needs to be good against Tyranids (probably including a Trygon/Mawloc), Necrons (possible Monolith) and Eldar. There will be 4 battles. (One objectives, one annihilate and I dont know the othertwo yet(keep u posted though))
This is a list of everything I think I can use:
4 Company Commanders
1 Command Squad
5 Scouts with Snipers
5 Terminator Squads
10 Assault Marines
3 Bikers (Just bought(they seem crap though))
8 Squads of Devastators (You get the point (customizable))
2 Land Raiders
I HAVE TO CUT THIS DOWN TO 600 POINTS AND I HAVE NO IDEA HOW!
Instead of cutting down from a larger list, start with the basics of a smaller list and move your way up.
I would figure what you want for two troops choices, and your HQ, then decide what you need from there. (or are you not required to follow those restrictions?)
Scout Snipers would be a good start. Give you some ranged fire effective against infantry and monstrous creatures (for the tyranids). 5 with snipers, cloaks and a misslie launcher would run you 100pts.
After that, the big decision is how mobile you want to be. I feel at 600pts that combat squading would be a fair call. Maybe taking a 10-man Marine squad, flamer/meltagun, missile launcher, powerfist and splitting it. Put the Missile launcher back to provide support fire, and shove everyone else (with your HQ) into a standard razorback for mobility and added firepower.
I've always noticed that chaplains are astoundingly effective at low points, you don't even really need to upgrade one, just throw it on the field to bring swift smacky death to the enemies of the emperor.
After that you're looking at 435 points, which opens up a good amount of options. A dedicated close combat element wouldn't necessarily be bad. Nor would an extra vehicle (pred/dread) A 5 man sternguard squad in a razorback would actually fill up your points to exactly what you have left.
So something like
Elt: 5 sternguard, razorback
Trp: 10 Tactical, missile launcher, flamer, powerfist, razorback .
Trp: 5 Scouts snipers, missile launcher, cloaks
21 bodies, two vehicles.
You couldn't go far wrong with Alzard's advice. I've went for mobility with the list I've wrote.
HQ: Chaplain, Jump Pack
Trp: Tactical Squad (x10) Meltagun, Missile Launcher, Power Fist, Rhino
Trp: Scouts (x5) Bolters/Bolt Pistols and Combat Blades
Fst: Assault Squad (x5) Power Fist
Fst: Landspeeder Storm
600 exactly. 21 bodies, three vehicles.
