I'm working on an IG army using counts-as Orks. The whole shebang is going to be covered on ==My== blog (link's in the sig), but for now I'm trying to find a list that I like and can be competitive as well as reflective of the army's character. I'm also limited in what models I can put together (no flyers atm unless I can pick up cheap fighta bommas or model planes to loot). 1 Chimera, 3 Trukks, 2 BWagons, 3 Russes as Bwagons, 2 Sents, Koptaz, scratch built Kanz, and the like.
So, here's ==My== latest take.
CCS-Straken, 3 meltas, medic, bodyguard, astropath, Chimera (Warboss and retinue riding in an armored Trukk)
Vets-3 plasma, Chimera (Skarboyz in Armored Trukk)
Vets-3 melta, Chimera (Skarboyz in Armored Trukk)
PCS-4 melta, Chimera (Lootenant and retinue in Armored Trukk)
Infantry-AC, GL, Commissar (Boyz led by Da Komisork)
2x Infantry-AC, GL (Boyz, heavy weapons are a Loota and ammo runt)
2x (solo) Hellhound w/ multi-melta (Skorcha wagon, a Battlewagon stripped down and its transport space taken up by fuel drums)
2 Scout Sentinels with autocannons (sneaky Kanz)
2x (solo) Demolisher (looted tank)
Leman Russ Battle Tank w/ lascannon (looted tank)
So it's a mech list with an infantry contingent added in. Straken and his unit operate like a normal meltaVet unit, but they also pack a nasty wallop and if need be they can buff infantry around them or just hop out and slap somebody silly. Who says IG can't cc? I've got plenty of hulls, guns, and flexibility to cover Straken's cost and the man himself can do some damage (as well as take a lot himself).
So, any thoughts on the list or conversion ideas would be greatly appreciated.
First off, how dare you steal my army conversion! Just kidding. :]
It looks fairly standard. I'm not a Straken fan but he is fluffy for your purposes. The Bodyguard can probably go if you need points.
I'am assuming all Chimeras have ML/HF as I know you to be a good player.
I don't see a lot of point in the Commissar, he's expensive and you usually want your IG to break in CC. I'm not a fan, even if they're decently fighty.
Not a big believe in BS3 1 shot guns that can't take Orders, your Russ would probably be better off with a HF or HB. Cannons and Lascannons don't mix well, so you're effectively paying points and assuming you'll take a Weapon Destroyed but not be Wrecked, Shaken or Stunned. Not needed.
Not sure what you could spend those points on but I'm sure you can find something better. Probably Marbo, he's a must run in any IG army and you have the Astropath. I converted mine from a Kommando.
You know what they say about great minds...they are all ==Me== and everyone else is a copycat joker
Straken's squad can dish out and take a lot of punishment, the bodyguard helps a bit too (sucking up 3 wounds all by his lonesome).
Commy ain't costing too much and it lets ==Me== blob if necessary. Normally I'd like to break, but it depends on what's going on. 30 stubborn dudes will hold an objective for a while, with counter attack and furious charge they may even win a fight.
The last Russ I'm iffy on, but its main job is sitting back and going after transports. Battle Cannons do that nicely, and when/if the lascannon hits, then it's gravy. I was thinking Eradicator or Executioner if I could find the points.
That's interesting. I don't see basic Russes as tank hunters, more like infantry hunters, their cannon hurts any infantry at realistically any position. They're obviously not BAD against armor but the scatter can hurt more. You have about as much armor kill as you need, I'd grab more Meltas if anything but I hate non-Melta or Demo Cannons against vehicles, bad personal luck.
I see what you mean about blobbing for objectives, personally I'd trust Vets in armor, hopefully with a cover save. I'd at least make the Commissar a bit fighty, a PW with Strakens ability could make him matter. Not something I'd use but at least make him count.
Strakens unit can dish out punishment but even with FnP they can't take much. If that transport gets popped in the wrong place, he's the only one who's going to live, which is fine as he does most of the work. Like I said, very fluffy but I might run him on the cheap, Medics are kinda pricey combined with T3 and awful saves.
Still a cool concept imo.
A single Russ isn't much of a tank hunter compared to say, Vendettas. But 2 of them have a pretty good chance of popping a transport between them.
Tactically, I don't know if this list makes the best use of Strakken. JWolf's recent Strakken list (when you peel away the waste) is actually pretty good as it uses a lot of long-range AT to force your enemy forward into his infantry blobs-O-doom. Maybe you could improve on that idea.
Ok, so something more like artillery, HWS and Vendettas to plink away at range with Straken, blob and Chimera Vets to act as mobile response?
I could drop the Sents and Russ for an Executioner, or just use the BWagons as artillery.
Interesting, I hadn't seen that. I'll do some testing and some thinking and see what I can come up with.
Did he ever test that list against another shooting army? I don't think you could drive every list forward which could open up some problems, especially if they have S6 templates which aren't that uncommon.
It sounds different at least.
