not too experianced with 40k, got alot of the models but until now have been a solid fantasy player. Well with having seen whats meant to be happening to fantasy in 8th edition, (god damn Matt Ward!) i think im going to swap over to 40k. Anyway hoping to get some advice on my first list.
Here it goes...
Pedro Kantor = ##
(yes i know he's crimson fists but im using him as an imperial fist)
8 Sterngaurd = 240
3x Combi Melta
Land Raider = ##
(not sure wether to use crusader or normal yet)
10 Tactical Marines = 205
10 Tactical Marines = 205
5 Scouts = 100
Missile Launcher (may swap out for the heavy bolter option)
Vindicator = 125
Preaditor = 85
Heavy Bolter Sponsens
Dreadnought = 115
Plasma / Assault Cannon
Total = 1500pts
Is this list too shooty, too balanced (have been told balanced lists dont do to well), not balanced enough? I prety green when it comes to how 40k armies work.
I feel you have a very solid start here. And yes, may Matt Ward die as he slowly works his way into 40K as well.
First off, the Land Raider is dead weight. You have no assaulty units and that's the only reason to run one. Your Tactical Squads are better off in Rhinos and your Sternguard are better off in a Pod/Rhino. You can buy all those and save a lot of points by dropping the Raider.
I'd go Melta on the Tacticals, it's the 5th Ed weapon. Lots of armor going around and you need ways to bust it in every unit you can and it's not bad for MCs either.
Keep the ML in the Scouts, it's the more complimentary and useful option.
Siege Shield is far from a must on the Vindi, I'd lose it but up to you.
Predator is fine, I'm not a Predator fan because of weak side armor and lack of move/fire but some prefer them. I'd grab 2 Vindis for redundancy and scare factor personally, draw fire off those transports.
Dreadnought is good, either weapon is great. AC is a bit more armor killing and Plasma is for MEQ hate. I'd buy him a Pod as well, walking Dreads tend to die swiftly and/or get left behind.
With a little redundancy and some more transports, you have a very solid list. Not sure how many points you'd have left over if you made the changes but probably enough for some upgrades here and there.
Heh I've got my fingers in my ears when it comes to Fantasy at the moment.
I would follow Prince's advice (he does know what he's talking about. Time to time ) There is no real need for the Land Raider. Ditching him and using those points to grab your Tacticals a Transport (Razorbacks are pretty cool) and the Sternguard can make do with whatever Rhino/Pod.
With left over points I'd upgrade the Predator into another Vindicator so it's more of a "oh my god! shoot them" factor. This should leave your Rhino's and Dread alone for the most part letting your units do what they do.
Other than that, What Prince said.
It really feeds my ego when people say "What Prince said". Sometimes it's good to be bored in the dead of night.
If you go with transports, I personally am fond of Vindis. They attract firepower against every army, where as a Predator is only dangerous to some armies. Also, Predators can't advance with your army, unless your BAs and cheat. Who do I know that plays BAs.......
Besides the term young I have no issues with that statement.
*cuts sexual tension with knife*
Thanks for that guys, it realy helps considering i dont yet have a preditor model but do own 2 vindicators. In the mean time, if im taking rhinos for my tactical squads is there any changes i should make? i.e. dropping the missile launcher for somthing else or incorperating meltas. Is thier anything the stern guard cant do without?
Pah there's no tension here. There's no denial here.
Missile Launcehrs are pretty good to be honest with you. There just good against everything you're likely to face so in an all comers list they're the ideal weapons.
Some more Melta guns would be handy though but you;ve got the Sternguard and Vindicators for Heavy tank killing. They're cheap though so it's almost rude not to take them.
Yeah keep the ML it's a great gun, although a bit less since you can't Combat Squad. Meltas are the way to go, you'll actually save points.
Sternguard need 1 PF and as many Combi-Meltas as you can grab, 5-6 is the best number for guaranteed tank kill, you can always fire less than you need too if it's a light tank.
