I am entering a tournament in August; it's been about four years since I played competitively and almost to years since I last played Warhammer 40k; due to work, university and getting old... lol.
I'm entering the tournament with my Soul Drinkers army; now because they don't really have there own vehicles (due to there preference drop pod and ship-to-ship assaults) I'm going to play vehicles as commandeered Crimson Fist vehicles (as the chapter loves hi-jacking vehicles and driving in to the middle of the enemy or objective them cutting them to shreds).
I'm not playing drop pods; though it was my first intention, because I've read that in 5th ed. they suck unless supporting sufficient ground units and in 750pts that is going to be hard. I read a couple posts, and for the pure fact I would love to field a land raider and hoping opponents will have limitations in dealing with 14 14 14 armour I want to field one.
The list so far:
Librarian Tyrendian - 100Pts
- The Avenger (great fluff-wise)
- Force Dome
10 Tactical Marines - 185Pts
Power Weapon, Flamer, Missile Launcher
5 Scouts ~ Squad Eumenes - 85Pts
Sniper Rifles & Heavy Bolter (Hellfire Rounds)
Commandeered Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer - 270/260Pts
Fitted with Hunter Killer Missile & Multi-Melta
Techmarine Lygris & Thunderfire Cannon - 100Pts
1 x Servitor attached to unit.
Total Points: 750/740
The plan is to send Librarian Tyrendian and the tactical squad up the flank in the Land Raider and disembark in one of the enemies quarters forming a firing line. If I play a Crusader this will likely stay back with them and provide suppression fire against any advancing units. Techmarine Lygris will cover the opposing flank varying the payload as necessary; while scout squad Eumenes will attempt to enter cover near Lygris and pin down any units attempting to advance on table half.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated; I'm going to be having 2-3 test matches a week to ensure I tweak it enough; and will keep you updated on the progess.
I'm also considering going for the Blood Angel codex instead and using close combat marines as troops replacing the tactical squad. However, this would mean I lose the Thunderfire Cannon....
What are your thoughts?

Seems dead hard, only IG and other Marines will likely beat you. I'd go with a Crusader as the Hurricane Bolters will be fun in such low points but drop the HKM, it's useless. Grab some Extra Armor instead.
I like a Missile Launcher in the Scouts more, it shoots at MCs which Snipers are good for but can still do a blast against infantry. A Meltagun in the Marines would be nice as well, possibly a PF on the Sarge but I don't think you have the points.
I've been examining the pro's and con's and think the redeemer is the way to go with AP3 and ignores cover; for the Crusader to be affective it either needs to be within 12" or stationary which makes the hurricane bolters kind of useless. S6 AP3 ingores cover, 9" flame template makes short work of anything.
Admittedly, I've had a couple people say to not use a Land Raider due to the points cost, which I understand, normally I wouldn't but ARMOUR 14 14 14 is making me rather hopeful... some have said give the Tactical squad a powerfist & melta, load 'em in a Rhino and add a Predator for support.... Really really torn....
Land Raiders are crap at higher points because Melta or a gun like Melta is everywhere and you tank has no chance.
Like I said, it's a personal choice. I've screwed over Redeemer users many times because it's difficult to hit a unit with both templates and keep them off the Raider AND hit enough guys to make it worth it. They're easier to play around and have less offensive output at range, if you want to get close that's making me happy. The other variants have flexibility, and I place that high on my wish list.
Neither is crap compared to the other, bottom line.
I think I'll play test both, but understand your argument for going the crusader. I'm magnetising the guns to make it a quick swap. Thanks for the advice. I'm having a couple test matches tomorrow and post the results.
Good luck, I like your theme and diversity.
On Friday night the Soul Drinkers fought against an army of Eldar Jet Bikes and Vypers.
The mission type was capture and control. The Eldar had choice of deployment and opted to start the first turn. They deployed in the heavy cover of an imperial administration area.
The Soul Drinkers are taken up defensive lines behind barricades as the were mostly exposed while the aliens took cover behind imperial buildings. The Land Raider, with Librarian Tyrendian and the tactical marines, positioned itself to charge up straight into enemy territory and claim the objective.
2 Eldar jetbike squadrons took cover behind and imperial watchtower; closing in on the Thunderfire cannon. The Eldar Vypers unleashed a volley of shots glancing the hull of the Land Raider, unfortunately they were enough to stun the crew and prevent movement temporarily. The Eldar exarch and his shining spears took the opposite flank but taking cover behind a ruined building.
Scout squad Eumenes advanced taking cover in a forward firing position with improved LoS. Librarian Tyrendian and his marines disembarked the Land Raider due to it being temporarily immobilized by the Vypers, the squad moved into to the cover of an imperial building before firing a volley of bolter shells through the ruins killing an Eldar Shining Lance while Lib. Tyrendian called on the power of the warp creating a force field to protect him and his marines. Techmarine Lygris spotted the jetbikes closing in on his position from behind the watchtower and brought the full power of the thunderfire cannon to bear upon the jetbikes. 5 jetbikes were blasted to shreds accross to squadrons; the survivors fled of the board and turn one ended.
In the remaining turns, the Shining Spears assaulted Tyrendian and his tactical marines; the marines did poorly in the combat but Tyrendians force shield protected them long enough to kill the Eldar Exarch's retinue before the Exarch landed the killing blow on Tyrendian.
With the Thunderfire Cannon destroyed, after causing much devastation, Techmarine Lygris destroyed three eldar jetbikes in close combat before moving in to avenge the death of Tyrendian. However Lygris fell to the power weapons of the Exarch, but not before wounding him greatly.
The Land Raider destroyed the two eldar Vypers. In the final turn the Exarch charged Scout Squad Eumenes which had moved back to our defending objective. However the scouts fell short of the defending objective and the game ended in a draw, albeit a bloody and successful one!
sounds like allot of fun do you think the LR was worth taking in a 750pts because im going into a 750 doubles with some 12yr old kid on the 31st so i want to know how to give me an edge
ps. this will be my 1st tournament
I had two more games this weekend. Soul Drinkers VS. Imperial Guard & Soul Drinkers VS. Orks.
Opponent had 2 Valkyrie Gunships, 2 Veteran Squads w/ 1 Psyker, & a Basilisk.
I was granted 1st turn after opponent won the roll-off. In turn one I charge the Land Raider 12" towards the Basilisk (Valkyrie deployed as reserved with troops inside). Multi-Melta destroyed the Basilisk in turn 1. Booya! The enemy deployed his reserves in turn. I moved the Land Raider towards them. Nothing else significant happened. In there turn 4 moved closer to my Thunderfire and scouts and he disembarked his units. He managed to kill my Techmarine & Cannon with fire from two squads. In my turn my tacticals disembarked the Land raider. Land raider destroyed Valkyrie which blew up above the IG killing 3. My marines opened fire killing all but 2 of the IG Vet Squad, they fled. My opponent loaded his other Vets and psyker back in Valkyrie and moves behind my line. It killed one scout. In my turn, Land Raider and marines moved within 12" of Valkyrie. Everything opened fire. Scouts rolled first and missile launcher wrecked the Valkyire completely annihilating the enemies forces.
I had lost 1 x scout sniper and my techmarine. My opponent was a veteran player, so the taste of victory was great.
