    Help making a list!

Okay so my brother decided to quit WH40k, and gave me ALL of his space marine stuff (score) prob is, I have NO idea how to use them, yet alone make an effective list , here is a list of what I got
    captain
    3 sergeants
    20 tactical
    5 terminators
    5 devastators
    rhino transport
    whirlwind
    1 biker
    2 dreadnoughts
    and about 5 scouts
-If you think I should get some more please do tell

So that's what I got and I really need help making a list, I want to have them on the board ASAP so would you mind spitting some suggestion lists out for me? thanks! (PS they are ultramarine.)

    Greetings

Looking at it this is not a bad bunch of models.

First and foremost - get yourself a CODEX. Its the best upgrade you will ever get for your army.

From there - looking at them there is what I would consider to be a solid 1000pt base army with some bits.

So - the basic list (given the lack of detail I'm assuming base models for this list)

    HQ - Captain
Elite - Terminators (I'll assume they are Standard Terms rather than Assault Terms)
Elite - Dreadnought (std is with CCW and Multi Melta)
    Elite - Dreadnought
Troop - Tac Squad 9 SM's + Sgt (Flamer and Missile Launcher) - In Rhino
Troop - Tac Squad 9 SM's + Sgt (Flamer and Missile Launcher)
    Troop - Scout Squad - 5 Scouts

If you give out a few upgrades - power sword for your Captain etc. you get to about 1000pts.

There is quite abit of debate around the usefullness of scouts - but for you at this point I'm adding them in mainly as objective holders.

As for your Dreadnoughts. The default one is equipped with CCW and Multi Melta - and thats the one you get in the Assault on Black Reach (AoBR) box. However if your models are the one from the Dreadnought kit you will have options of Assault Cannon, LasCannon, CCW and Missile Pod. If you do have these then building an Anti-Tank Dreadnought with LasCannon and Missile Pod is going to be reallly good for this army at this point.)

As for the rest of your models.

I've always found Devastators to be too expensive to field. I get a box or two and build them up so I can use them for Heavy Weapons options for my regular Tac Squads.

The Whirlwind - Probalby the last of all the Heavy Support Vehicals I'd take so I'd be looking to get a Predator or a Vindicator pretty soon.

The Biker - if you only have one - rebuild him as an objective "Man Down".

Still - if you put it all on the board as is you probalby would be looking at 1250pts.

If you put some more detail with respect to the models you got (weapon options etc.) I'll see if I can come up with a better list.

Oh - and how many points you like to play would help too
    Armies (W/L/D)
    Imperial Guard: 2500pts 10/0/1, Space Marines: 2000pts 22/0/3
    CSM: 1750pts 5/0/0, DE: 1850pts 19/0/1, ORKs: 2500pts 11/1/0,

Thanks for the help! and I would prob be playing a 1000 - 1500 points games, I would like a balanced list because I do play against a wide variety of players. And some tactics if you can about how to run the list would be great, thanks

Space Marines are extremely customisable. Even “vanilla” ones like the Ultramarines.

I’ll use one of the first Ultramarine Armies I ever took out as an example of what you could do. We normally play 1750pt but I’ve played everything from 750pt to 2500pt games. I’ll modify it a bit to get it down to your 1500pts and try to incorporate as much as I can of what you have got.

The army was built around Chief Librarian Tigurius and was way fun.

HQ: Chief Librarian Tigurius (230 pts)
(Probably the most powerful psycher in the Imperium. He can use his powers 3 times and has access to all the psychic powers.)

    Elite: Terminator Squad (200 pts)
1 Terminator Sergeant (Basic with Power Sword and Storm Bolter)
4 Terminator Troopers (Basic with Power Fist and Storm Bolter)
(I’ve kept these guys basic because I don’t know what you have – still these boys are bad – if a little pricy)
<Gate these guys around to where you want them with Tigurius – then do whatever you want to do to whoever you don’t like the most… >

    Elite: Dreadnought (180 pts)
1 Dreadnought (TL Lascannon and Missile Launcher)
    Dedicated Transport = Drop Pod
(I’m going to assume that you have the “regular” boxed dreadnought)
<Drop Pod Assault turn 1 on a flank and blow the snot out of something you don’t like. Then plan to say good bye to the Dread>

    Elite: Dreadnought (145 pts)
1 Dreadnought (TL Lascannon and Missile Launcher)
(I’m going to assume that you have the “regular” boxed dreadnought)
<This one is the keeper, pop him somewhere safe ish and snipe at anything you don’t like>

    Troops: Tactical Squad (205 pts)
1 Space Marine Sergeant (Basic no upgrades at 1500pts)
9 Tactical Space Marines (Basic with Flamer and Missile Launcher) 1 Rhino (Unit Type: Vehicle Dedicated Transport = Rhino
(I’ve gone with standard equipment at 1500pts)
<There are a range of ways you can use this squad, including splitting it into combat squads with one squad (the one with the flamer) in the transport and the other safely guarding home base, but it is basically a way of getting troops safely to an objective and holding it>

    Troops: Tactical Squad (205 pts)
1 Space Marine Sergeant (Basic no upgrades at 1500pts)
9 Tactical Space Marines (Basic with Flamer and Missile Launcher)
    Dedicated Transport = Rhino
(Same as the other Troop Choice)

    Troops: Scout Squad (135 pts)
1 Sergeant Telion (He’s a Special Upgrade, gives you guys serious targeting ability and additional cover saves)
4 Space Marine Scouts (Sniper Rifles and Heavy Bolter w/Hellfire Shells)
(I’m taking a liberty here and equipping these guys with Sniper Rifles)
<This unit infiltrates onto an objective that is in cover at the beginning of the game and sits there. They can use their sniper rifles to plink away at things you don’t like. Telion’s special weapon is pretty awesome as is his ability to lend his BS to any of the other troops>

    Heavy Support: Predator (85 pts)
1 Dakka Predator (Autocannon and Heavy Bolters)
(I’ve gone with a Dakka Predator over an Annihilator because of the Dreadnoughts and the Vindicator)
<This is for chopping up enemy transports, then enemy troops>

    Heavy Support: Whirlwind (85 pts)
1 Whirlwind (Basic with Whirlwind Missile Launcher)
(Basically I’ve added this because you have it)
    <Indirect Fire Support>

    Total Roster Cost: 1470

I’ve left a few points just in case you want to customise something eg:
    • give the Tac Sergeants Power Fists or Power Swords and Melta Bombs
    • or you could dress up one of the Tac Squads with a Plasma Cannon from the Devastator squad models.
    • Or you could give your Terminators a heavy weapon choice (if one of your models has one)

If you have the AoBR Dreadnoughts you won’t have the weapon options (although you may be in a club that will let you play as) so if you can’t take the upgrades that will give you about 70 more points.

You will need to pick up a couple of items to make the list work

    Tigrus and Telion
    A Drop Pod
    A Second Rhino
    A Predator

    How does that sound?

Cool - let us know how you get on - or if you have more questions.

And if you can identify the weapons on the Dreadnoughts and / or the Treminators I might be able to refine things a bit more.
